Presented by The Thames Art Gallery, Chatham

The Thames Art Gallery is bringing acclaimed Canadian abstract painter Ron Shuebrook back to the Audrey Mistele Art Studio of the Cultural Centre, Chatham. Upon the conclusion of his nationally traveled drawing exhibition, organized by the Thames Art Gallery in 2013, Ron has generously agreed to return to Chatham for one week. On July 13 - 17, 2105 he will teach a drawing class and share his comprehensive knowledge of contemporary art. Ron was the Gallery’s ‘Artist in Residence’ in the fall of 2012 in preparation for his national exhibition entitled, ‘Drawing’ guest curated by John Kissick.

Ron has designed a workshop, to develop each participant’s skills of observation. Beginning with charcoal or graphite on paper, a still life will serve as the subject and catalyst for the drawings that will be pursued in the first day’s session. A discussion will follow about how and why participants might use their chosen materials to evoke the still life, and to organize purposefully the shapes, planes, lines, and textures derived from their perceptions of this subject. In the following sessions, the possibilities of memory, imagination, the unconscious, and process as sources and means for creative image making, including abstraction, will be addressed. The cost of the workshop is $230 plus HST and all materials will be supplied.

Ron has taught and been an administrator at many arts educational institutions in the United States and Canada including Kent State University, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, the Ottawa School of Art, and the University of Guelph. He also served as the President and Vice President, Academic, of the Ontario College of Art and Design. This is a rare opportunity to participate in an intensive drawing workshop with a nationally and internationally recognized artist. Class size is limited so please register early to avoid disappointment.
