Dear members of the OCAD U community,

It’s been a long and unpredictable year, and as we approach the holiday break, my wish for each of you is that you will rest, relax and recharge.

In my short time at OCAD U – it’s been six months – I’ve seen and heard first-hand the tremendous love you all have for your students, your work and this community. Your collective creativity and commitment to deliver the best possible learning experiences and faculty/student services are truly inspiring. And yes, all of this hard work does come with a price. Many of us are tired, burned-out even, and the prospect of spending this winter in lockdown is not what we all hoped for.

Please know that our sincere thanks for your efforts and hard work are indeed heartfelt and that we do see you. I think much of our resilience comes from the generosity of spirit that characterizes our OCAD U community.

Despite the year we have all had, many of you have still found the time to give back to the broader community – to help those in need especially during the holiday season – either through volunteering or by making a donation. In this issue of The Insider, we’ve compiled a list of many ways faculty and staff are giving back to others.

We also know that our students have been especially hard hit by the pandemic and that is why we have decided to direct our usual holiday giving to our students.

We have joined forces with the OCAD U Student Union to support our students in three ways: the COVID-19 Emergency Bursary Fund, the Student Union’s Wellness Food Boxes that provide high-quality and locally grown produce and is suitable to feed one person for a week, and the Digital Grocery Gift Card Program that helps students pay for needs that cannot be met by the food. I hope you will consider giving generously to one of these programs.

On a personal note, I want to thank you all for making my first six months so rewarding and for welcoming me warmly into your lives. I wish you all a joyful, restful and rejuvenating season and look forward to a 2021 filled with optimism and excitement.

Be safe and have a positive holiday break.
