DR. ANDREA FATONA NAMED TIER 2 CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR

OCAD University congratulates Dr. Andrea Fatona, Associate Professor, Faculty of Art, on being named Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Canadian Black Diasporic Cultural Production. The announcement was made jointly by The Canada Research Chairs Program (CRC) and The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), with a $14 million award to research infrastructure to Canada Research Chairs.

OCAD U PROVOST ISSUES STATEMENT ON REPORT ABOUT INDIGENOUS FACULTY

The Council of Ontario Universities has published the results of the Indigenous Faculty Survey under the report Lighting The Fire: Experiences of Indigenous Faculty in Ontario Universities. OCAD University is now reviewing the report to better understand how its findings can align with current initiatives and investigating the ways that we can continue to make impactful policies that strengthen our commitment to ensuring that Indigenous voices are honoured and included in all academic communities across the province.

AWARDS RECOGNIZE DISTINGUISHED AND EARLY STAGE RESEARCH OF TWO FACULTY MEMBERS

Congratulations to two OCAD U faculty members for their contributions to research!

Simone Jones, associate professor in the Faculty of Art, is the 2020-21 recipient of the OCAD University Award for Distinguished Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity.

Immony Mèn, assistant professor in the Faculty of Design is the 2020-21 recipient of the OCAD University Award for Excellence in Early Stage Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity.

GRADEX 105 GOES VIRTUAL

Check out OCAD U’s annual graduate exhibition – on now with three new platforms: an online exhibition, videos on OCAD U LiVE, the University’s 24/7 video channel, and outdoor public activations/projections (scheduled for February 14 to 28, 2021). The online platform will include an opportunity for industry members to connect with artists and designers to recruit new talent for their own galleries and firms. 

OCAD U VIRTUAL GALA RAISES MORE THAN $400,000 TO SUPPORT STUDENTS

It may have been virtual, but OCAD U’s Gala was an exciting event for more than 300 guests, complete with fabulous musical performances, a tribute to President Emerita Dr. Sara Diamond, an online auction, and a lot of fun! Most importantly, the event raised more than $460,000 to support Canada’s next generation of art, design, and media leaders.

RECENT OCAD U GRAD EARNS MITACS AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING INNOVATION

OCAD U medal winner and Master of Inclusive Design grad, Pui Yee Nikkie To, has been awarded the Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — Master’s. To was recognized for her innovative work to help the more than 74,000 children and youth with special needs in Ontario by ensuring complex sensory needs are met when designing children’s treatment centres — a first for the sector.

NEW REPORT SHEDS LIGHT ON BARRIERS TO CREATIVE WOMEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The impact of COVID-19 has been particularly hard on creative entrepreneurs, especially women, Indigenous, racialized and other diverse entrepreneurs. That’s one of the findings of a new report released by OCAD University researchers Dr.  Alia Weston, Alexandra Hong, Karli Ferriolo, and Jacquie Shaw coinciding with Women’s Entrepreneurship Day. Critical Perspectives on Creative Women Entrepreneurs, provides new insights on creative entrepreneurship through the lived experiences of women and individuals of marginalized genders in the OCAD U and surrounding community.
