100% Chair’ showcases how Radical Norms has developed a tool that acts as a framework to interface with AI in the design process. The function of the tool is to provide an actual physical interface that a human can use to create chair model compositions. These compositions are then rotated around on a 360 degree axis, all the while being scanned by A.I. that identifies ‘chair’ in varying percentages of probability. The designers go through an iterative process of prototyping forms, functions, materiality and contexts that might satisfy the wanted rates of the A.I. predictions. Each one of the chairs suggests different relationships with the A.I.’s ‘worldview’ – one accommodates it (50% accuracy), one impresses it (100% accuracy) and one avoids it (0%) keep the chair reserved for human only users. As soon as the A.I. identifies those rates – a finalized chair is produced.
