Danny Custodio: Azulejos (part of Contact 2008)

Custodioimage
Thursday, May 8, 2008 - 4:00am to Friday, May 30, 2008 - 4:00am

Almada Negreiros Gallery at the Portuguese Consulate in Toronto presents the photographs of OCAD alumnus Danny Custodio.
Custodio's Azulejos provides glimpses into the life of the labourer through Portuguese ceramic tile murals. In his photographs printed onto tiles, he assumes the roles of those who laboured – not only for survival, but for the love of tending a garden and the ensuing sense of pride. This work is a means for him to piece together the tales passed down by his ancestors, and in re-enacting these moments, he adopts and perpetuates that history.

Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 4:00am to Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 4:00am

Fascinated by the composite nature of plywood, OCAD alumna Yechel Gagnon believes it holds many possibilities, many secrets in its multiple layers. Similar to a sculptor who chooses a specific block of marble to carve, Gagnon is guided by the make-up of each piece of plywood. Using routers, sanders chisel knives and grinders, she strives to unravel the existing information within the wood. Each work is a meditative reflection that often suggests landscapes, oneiric spaces or topographical maps.

Yechel Gagnon completed a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts from Concordia University after receiving an AOCAD with Honours in Drawing and Painting from the Ontario College of Art and Design. She exhibits her work in commercial galleries, artist run centres and museums across Canada and has two major publications to her name.

The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Kitchener presents work by OCAD alumna Mary Anne Barkhouse in the Keith & Winifred Shantz Gallery and the Donald & Pamela Bierstock Gallery. The exhibition includes exquisitely crafted representations of animals adorning baroque furniture; this juxtaposition provides a stark contrast reminiscent of the palace gardens at Versailles.
