MESH’s Art Exhibition Fundraiser

MESH logo
Saturday, November 14, 2015 - 12:00am to 4:00am

The inspiration for MESH comes from the idea of bringing all kinds of people together from different backgrounds, practices and walks of life. This exhibition will “MESH” the unique individuals of both the Faculty of Art and Design, giving students a platform to showcase their talents as well as working together to raise money for a greater cause. This will be your chance, your platform to speak and be seen. We are looking for creative artists looking to change the world and address the social issues of today with their innovative ideas. We're looking for art that reflects raw human emotions and narratives. Art related to isolation, change, war, lost hope, confusion, compassion and anything related to what the Syrian refugees must feel being displaced from their homeland. We want to have everyone embrace Canada's decision to welcome these refugees through showing the reality of what is happening in their world. It will be a grand social event with music, performances, drinks and fun! Let's all celebrate life. The proceeds from this event (as well as fees) will be donated to Syrian refugees displaced in this current world crisis. It is optional for artists/vendors to donate some of their profits for the cause, but it is encouraged. It is crucial for us to come together and help those in need in any way possible. If you can't make it, we welcome donations online. SHOW Friday, November 13, 7 to 11 p.m. (49 McCaul) For any questions or inquiries please direct them to meshsubmissions@gmail.com

Ninety-nine works by 74 OCAD University students, alumni and faculty were unveiled October 21 in the Mississauga offices of Mercedes-Benz Financial Services (MBFS). At the opening of the Experiencing Perspectives exhibition, President and CEO Stefan Karrenbauer thanked the artists for bringing creativity and art appreciation to the workplace.

OCAD U alumni from the class of 1971 to the class of 2015 were in attendance, mingling with MBFS staff and invited guests. This is the seventh annual exhibition in the series, and for the past three years MBFS has been purchasing art from these exhibitions for its permanent collection. The company has similar initiatives with art schools in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and Fort Worth, Texas.

Experiencing Perspectives was made possible through the Faculty of Art’s Associate Dean, Outreach, Anda Kubis; Natalie Waldburger, Ada Slaight Chair of Contemporary Painting and Print Media; and Assistant Professor Jennie Suddick. The art will remain in place for a year.

Rocks, Stones, and Dust

Wednesday, October 28, 2015 - 4:00am to Friday, December 18, 2015 - 5:00am

Rocks, Stones, and Dust
Curated by John G. Hampton
Opening Reception: Wednesday, October 28, 6:00 – 8:00pm, University of Toronto Art Centre

Michael Belmore, Bonnie Devine, Jimmie Durham, FASTWÜRMS, Jason de Haan, Spring Hurlbut, Kelly Jazvac, Susanne Kriemann, Lindsay Lawson, Nicholas Mangan, Marcelo Moscheta, Kerri Reid, Egill Sæbjörnsson, Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok, and Lawrence Weiner.

Rocks, Stones, and Dust is an exhibition devoted to rocks and their relations. It surveys diverse speculations on the roles that rocks play in the development of human culture and how they exist to and for themselves. Rocks are everywhere—they are in our tools, architecture, philosophy, theology, beneath our feet, and flying far above our heads—but this ubiquity sometimes masks their ontological significance. Rocks are prototypically non-human and characteristic of the least animated objects in our world, yet stones are born, they move, age, breed, and return to dust. Some ask us to pick them up off the side of the road and carry them with us, and others invite us to stare into their surfaces to look for inner truths. In their omnipresence, rocks can go unnoticed, but within object-oriented philosophies, aboriginal epistemologies, panpsychism, and countless other systems of knowledge, rocks are recurring characters that show us how even in what seems to be the least mobile of things, we can find life. The works brought together in Rocks, Stones, and Dust address this vitality and unearth the role rocks play in helping us understand questions of beingness outside of human being.

This exhibition is supported by the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Jackman Humanities Institute, Manulife Financial, and the Goethe-Institut Toronto.

Exaltation and the Fall

Photograph of a woman floating in water
Thursday, October 8, 2015 - 11:00pm to Friday, October 9, 2015 - 2:00am

Exaltation and the Fall is an exhibition that investigates the entangled relationship between the psyche in contact with a body of water. Acts of the body, represented through video installation, light projection, and photography perform rites of change, passage, and transformation. To exalt is to rise from within a murky depth, and to fall is to submerse into the unknown- water becomes the substrate for this rise and fall. It is a place for possibility within the calm, or calamity of the unknown.

Featuring works by Adam Filek, Daniel Pavis, Elizabeth Webb, Paige Sabourin, and Tara Morté.
Curated by Mary Ma

Live performances will take place throughout the opening reception in response to the exhibition- curtsey of artists Adam Filek, Christopher Heller, and work from choreographer Lauren Runions of I/O Movement.

Opening Reception: October 8, 7 to 10 p.m.

Panel Discussion- The Poetics of a Performative Act: Monday October 12, 4 p.m.
Join artists, curators, and writers in a casual forum as we discuss the relationship between performance and its significance to intersecting branches of embodiment, affect, and the natural landscape.

FUTURESCAPE

Thursday, October 9, 2014 - 11:00pm to Saturday, November 1, 2014 - 8:30pm

FUTURESCAPE provides a platform for artists to address concepts and tropes related to either an impending landscape (an envisioned place where Future Tense happens) or a fabricated artifact (an object that represents Future Tense). This exhibition is intended to spark conversation about the future as a place where artists and cultural producers are catalysts, which is an increasingly considered alternative to a future shaped by political or corporate bodies. The result is a collection of artists who either create work using high-tech media or use familiar materials to produce work that radiates futuristic ambiance, a wavelength that does not yet exist.

Curated by Rajni Perera.
