Show Statement:

I Know What You Are But What Am I explores the value, authority, and authenticity in the relationship between the original and the reproduction. Through their practices, artists Luke Van H, Owen Marshall and Cassie Paine position the “real” against the fabricated, calling into question the significance of each production method and the meanings these methods create.

Artists Bios:

Luke van H is a multi-disciplinary artist currently living in Toronto. Their current practice systematizes the painting process, creating delineations between image/idea generation and labour. The integration and separation of technology from everyday life is an ongoing interest in their work. Van H is currently completing their BFA at OCADU and is the 2018 recipient of the OCAD Project 31 Drawing and Painting Award.

Owen Marshall is a self-described interdisciplinary artist living and working in Toronto. His practice utilizes text and image to playfully call into question the authority of an artwork and the value of the original. Through hand-drawn reproduction techniques, Marshall explores the futility of a human attempt to perform a task normally designated to a machine and the inconsistencies and questions which arise from this action. He is currently completing a BFA in Printmaking at OCADU and is a gracious recipient of the Ada Slaight Scholarship.

Cassie Paine is a Sculpture and Installation Artist and Printmaker whose work reflects on the functional and authoritative role tools hold within our society. Her work investigates urban planning strategies, systems in place to control automotive and pedestrian traffic, and distinctions between public and private places. Paine holds a BFA with an honourable mention from OCAD University. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Windsor, ON, Toronto, ON, and Montreal, QC.
