Board of Governors’ internal election results announced

The results have been tabulated for the internal elections on the OCAD University’s Board of Governors that were held from May 29-31, 2019 for two-year terms starting July 1, 2019.

OCAD University is pleased to announce the successful candidates for the following positions:

Permanent Manager

Permanent Staff

Alvaro Araya, Senior Infrastructure Operations Analyst

Board of Governors positions: Internal call for nominations

Permanent staff and managers: consider becoming a member of the OCAD U Board of Governors. Nominations are now open for a two-year term commencing July 1, 2019. Two internal positions are available, one of which is elected from and by permanent managers at OCAD U; and the other, from and by permanent unionized staff and permanent exempt staff.

OCAD University’s Board of Governors is responsible for governing and managing the affairs of the university and has the necessary powers to do so, including the power to determine mission, vision and values of the University, appoint and remove the President and Chancellor, approve the annual budget of the University and monitor its implementation, establish administrative and operational policies and procedures, as well as other specific powers. The Board consists of members from the external community as well as executive, management, staff, faculty and student representatives drawn from the OCAD U community.

Nominations are currently open for the following positions on the Board of Governors starting July 1, 2019:

·       One (1) Permanent Manager position (two-year term)

·       One (1) Permanent Staff position (two-year term)

ACTRA names Rita Shelton Deverell 2018 Woman of the Year

OCAD University congratulates Rita Shelton Deverell, former member of the OCAD U Board of Governors, on her recognition as “Woman of the Year” by the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA).

A producer, director, actor, artist, broadcaster and scholar – among many other roles – Deverell has received awards ranging from Geminis to the Crystal Award from Women in Film & Television (WIFT-T).

Along with OCAD University, Deverell served on the boards of the Ontario Media Development Corporation, WIFT-T and Women in the Director’s Chair. She also volunteers with both the Canadian Senior Artists Research Network and MediaSmarts and is a Trustee of the Royal Ontario Museum. In 2005, she was named a member of the Order of Canada for her pioneering work in broadcasting

 

OCAD University announces new Chair and Vice-Chairs of Board of Governors

OCAD University’s Board of Governors has elected Jaime Watt, Executive Chairman, Navigator Ltd., as Chair of the Board of Governors for a one-year term as of November 11, 2017. He succeeds outgoing Chair Dr. John Semple.

Dr. Myrna Francis, President, Mfran Enterprises Inc., was elected First Vice-Chair, and Dr. Claude Galipeau Chief Revenue Officer of Torstar Corporation, Second Vice-Chair. Both will serve one-year terms. Outgoing Vice-Chairs David Holland and Sharifa Khan will continue to serve on the board.

“The university benefits enormously from the varied expertise and exceptional leadership of our Board of Governors,” said Dr. Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor. “I thank Sharifa Khan and David Holland for their hard work in their roles, and of course Dr. Semple for his insightful guidance over the past two years.”

Watt has been deeply involved with equality and human rights issues, and has received numerous awards for his service to the community, including Out on Bay Street’s Leader to be Proud of Award and the inaugural recipient of Egale’s Lifetime Achievement Award for equality rights. He is a sought-after public affairs commentator who specializes in public strategy issues. Watt joined the board in 2015.

"I am so thrilled to have been elected as Board Chair at OCAD U, the largest and most comprehensive art, design and digital media university in Canada. Make no mistake, OCAD U’s time has come. Just watch how the Creative City Campus (CCC) project will revitalize and expand the institution’s core creative spaces on McCaul Street,” said Watt.

Nominations open for positions on the Board of Governors & Senate

Nominations are now being accepted for several positions on the OCAD University Board of Governors and the Senate.

Be a part of the two governing bodies that oversee how your OCAD University is operated.  Like two chambers of a heart, the Board of Governors and Senate, have their own beats to pump the lifeblood into your University.  Join this integral leading function of your University!

Positions available are:

Board of Governors

  • One (1) Alumni (External Member) position, for a three-year term.
  • One (1) Graduate Student position for a two-year term.
  • One (1) Undergraduate Student position for a two-year term.

Senate

  • Two (2) Faculty positions from the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences and School of Interdisciplinary Studies for a two-year term.
  • Two (2) At-Large Faculty positions from any of the three faculties for a two-year term.
  • Two (2) Sessional Faculty positions from any of the three faculties for a one-year term. 
  • One (1) Graduate Student position for a one-year term.
  • Three (3) Undergraduate Student positions, one from each faculty, each for a one-year term.

Election for the Board of Governors

Monday, September 29, 2008 - 8:00pm to Saturday, October 4, 2008 - 4:00am

Elections to fill the Faculty and Undergraduate positions on the Board of Governors will be conducted on Thursday and Friday, October 2 and 3, 2008.
The electronic "polls" will open at 12:00 a.m. on October 2 and will close at 11:59 p.m. on October 3. Eligible voters have a full 48 hours in which to cast their ballots.
Here is the way to vote:
Either go directly to: (URL available Oct 2), or follow the link in the News & Announcement section of the OCAD homepage to the “Board of Governors” page where you will find a graphical link to the "Board of Governors Election".
Enter your username and password (the same ones you use to sign into your OCAD email account) and follow the on-screen directions to cast your vote.
Once you have voted, please take note of your personal confirmation code.
Be sure to sign out once your vote is cast.

OCAD Board of Governors Meeting

Monday, June 1, 2009 - 9:00pm to 11:00pm

In its monthly meetings the Board establishes policy and institutional priorities for the university. It makes major operating decisions and receives reports from the President; Vice-President, Academic; Vice-President, Administration; the Chair of the Academic Council; chairs of standing and ad hoc committees; and representatives of academic and administrative areas at the university as needed.
