2008 Student Retrospective Call For Submissions

The OCAD Student Union invites all OCAD students to submit work for consideration towards a student retrospective exhibition. We are looking for Art & Design of all types from every program as well as documentation from student groups and events.

The Retrospective will be in the Great Hall from April 15 to 21 with an opening reception on Thursday April 17, 6 to 9 pm. All are encouraged to
attend.

Be sure to have all submissions sent in by Monday April 7!

XPACE is seeking individual artist proposals of image-based work (photography, film, video, photo based printing, etc) for a curated exhibition to be part of the 2008 CONTACT Photography Festival. Under the theme, "Between Memory and History", CONTACT looks to examine the relationship between images and their accumulative role in constructing memory and history. XPACE seeks to facilitate this exploration with an exhibition of image-based works that push the boundaries of image making, encouraging submissions of work with a strong experimental focus. This includes, but is not limited to, film, video, photo-based printing, installation and performance. In addition to the submission package detailed below, XPACE suggests applicants express in their artist statement how CONTACT's theme "Between Memory and History" relates to the proposed body of work.

Deadline: Yellow Staircase Project Submission

The Yellow Staircase Project is a student initiative with full administrative support. To free the Yellow Staircase of its yellowness'and replace it with colourful paintings and murals'students are being asked to submit proposals.

The medium is paint but all students are welcome and encouraged to submit.

OCAD U Student Pride Exhibition Call for Submissions

OCAD U Pride Student Exhibition

An exhibition in celebration of the work, diversity and lives of our LGBTQI2-S students, Pride Toronto and our collective future. This exhibition will be presented alongside the work of Chicago-based artist Cheryl Pope in OCAD University's Great Hall from June 8 to July 4, 2016. Pope's work questions and responds to issues of power, inequality, race, gender and segregation.

This year's theme at Pride is "you can sit with us" and showcases all ages, sexual orientations, gender expressions, gender identities and ethnicities. We encourage students working in all mediums to apply!

The OCAD U Student Gallery is accepting submissions for the fall 2016 exhibition period. We accept group applications, and curatorial proposals from students and recent grads of all disciplines. For application guidelines, visit the OCAD U website (http://www.ocadu.ca/gallery/student-gallery.htm) and our facebook page.

Who may apply?: applications from individual artists, designers or curators, as well as group submissions. All exhibitions at the Student Gallery must be driven by a student or recent grads. No solo shows can be accommodated. The Selection Committee works to create a balanced program that reflects the diverse range of work produced across all programs at OCADU.

If you miss this submission period, there will be a second in the fall term!

An application must include the following:

  • A completed application form
  • An artist statement or exhibition proposal. Whether you apply as a group or as an individual, you must limit your written presentation to one page.
  • All proposals should be accompanied by visuals. This material should either document the actual work you propose toexhibit, or present work that will give the Selection Committee some understanding of your present and/or upcoming projects. You may submit a maximum of 10 hard-copy images or 5 minutes of time-based media. All images must be submitted as computer printouts or printed photographs. Time based media may be handed in on a CD, DVD or USB stick. No emailed material will be accepted, and please do not enclose original artwork. All visual documentation must be clearly labeled with the artist’s name and its medium, size, title and date etc. Your support materials will not be returned.

Propeller gallery presents our much-anticipated annual guest curated exhibition, now in its 19th year. Each year Propeller invites a prominent figure within the arts community to contribute their knowledge and experience in developing a theme and selecting works for a completely unique exhibition. This year we have the pleasure of hosting Toronto-based artist Barbara Astman as curator. The theme, Come Together invites artists to submit their most compelling work, exploring ideas around community and unification.

Curator’s statement:

The theme for the Propeller curated exhibition is “Come Together”. This is obviously based on the title of the well-known Beatle’s song from 1969. The song was written originally to facilitate building bonds and uniting as one.

I am applying those very words to the art community. “Come Together” makes the case for community both personal and public. It also addresses human attachment, love, intimacy, togetherness, human interaction and longing. I would like to see work submitted that takes this theme and runs with it, pushes it and expands upon it. I am not looking for literal or illustrative interpretations of community whether that is personal or public, but I am looking to be surprised and hopefully challenged by what you submit.

Since this exhibition will be taking place during Contact photography festival, it would be exciting to see some photo-based works that tackle this theme amongst the entries, but all mediums will be considered. I encourage submissions of time-based works, perfomative, audio and or text based works (maybe even photo-based work made without a camera). Artists should think broadly about the theme, I am looking for diversity in the submissions and work that speaks to your community, whether that be personal or public. I want to see what “Come Together” means to you and from there I will endeavor to create an exhibition/event that fully explores what community can mean on a broader scale. I would encourage you to think about not only the walls, but the windows, floors and the outdoor park across the street from the gallery.  There is limited space, but I challenge you to surprise and delight me with some outrageous ideas that can use the space in unique ways. Come together right now over me. (go ahead and sing it.)

CURATOR BIO

Barbara Astman’s work has received national and international recognition. Since the 1970s she has explored a wide range of photographic and mixed media. Her work is represented in many museum, corporate, and private collections, in Canada, United States, and Europe. Astman has degrees from the Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen, and Ontario College of Art. Active in the Toronto arts community, Astman has sat on numerous boards and advisory committees. She was a Trustee on the Board of Trustees at the Art Gallery of Ontario and an appointed member to the Canadian Curatorial Committee at the AGO from 2009 – 2013. Currently she is the Chair of the Art Advisory Committee, Koffler Gallery, Toronto.

In 2008 Astman and AGO Associate Curator, Canadian Art, Georgiana Uhlyarik collaborated on a curatorial project for the Transformation AGO Exhibition, dealing with Joyce Wieland and early feminist practice.

Astman’s photo-based work was included in the AGO exhibition titled: Beautiful Fiction, fall 2009. In May 2011, her recent installation, dancing with che: enter through the gift shop, opened at the Kelowna Art Galley and toured to the McMaster Museum of Art, Hamilton, ON, MOCA, Calgary and MOCCA, Toronto in the spring of 2013.

She was recently in the two group exhibitions, Art Gallery of Ontario, Light My Fire Part I: Some Propositions About Portrait and Photography through October 20, 2013 Astman was commissioned to create a photographic installation for the opening exhibition at the Koffler Gallery, Toronto in November 2013 - February 2014.   Most recently, April 2014, she had a solo show at the McIntosh Gallery, London, ON, accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue.  Canadian Art Magazine had a feature profile of Astman’s career in the Spring 2014 issue.  In the fall of 2014, her works held in the collection of the Duetsche Bank, NY, were exhibited in Herland, 60 Wall Gallery, Deutsche Bank, New York City, New York.  Currently Astman’s’ work is featured in Look Again: Colour Xerography Art Meets Technology at the AGO, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Ontario.  In the fall of 2015 her most recent work, I as artifact, opened as a solo show at the Corkin Gallery, Toronto.

A Labyrinth of Writing: Finding Your Story in Another Story

Exhibition will run March 31 –  April 7

All first year students at OCAD U are invited to participate in an exhibit that will explore the role of writing in the creative process of art and design. This is an opportunity to showcase how you’ve used the writing process in your art and design projects, and to work with other students to turn your writing into new works of art and design that bring together multiple voices and stories.

Writing is both an individual and collective practice. We often write to explore ideas, figure out what we want to say, and develop our own voice and identity as authors. But our writing always also occurs in dialogue with other people’s ideas and words. How have you used writing in your art and design work this year? What new works of art, design, and storytelling can you create by bringing together other students’ submissions? What happens to your own work when it travels into, and is taken up within, other students’ project and stories?

Here’s how you can participate:

1. Send us your writing from a first-year class. We’ll accept all forms of writing (sketchbook pages, journal entries, Canvas discussions, reading responses, or essays). Your submission page can include images too, if it also contains writing. It doesn’t matter if the work isn’t perfect. We want to showcase all the ways you’ve used writing in your creative practice.

  • Submit a PDF or Digital Image (jpeg format less than 5 mb)
  • Include your name, student number, title of the work, course code and title, and instructor

2. Work with a team of other first year students and OCAD U faculty to curate the exhibit.  We’ll meet weekly in March to create new art and design projects with the submissions and to curate the exhibition. Please join us on March 10 from 1 pm to 3 pm (Room 512 113 McCaul St.) to find out more about how to get involved!

Call for Submissions: Self Care for Artists & Designers Zine

The OCAD U Zine Collective will be producing a zine this term about self care for artists and designers. Self care can be defined as any intentional act you take to care for your physical, mental and emotional health. We are interested in all kinds of interpretations of this topic, especially as they relate to the experiences of artists and designers.

We will accept images, writing, comics, poems and more from a serious/semi-serious/humorous/critical/any perspective.

Possible content could include:
•strategies for how to take care of yourself

•exercises for artists to help our bodies survive long work sessions
•workbook content: colouring pages, relaxing projects, connect-the-dots
•methods for coping with the specific pressures and anxieties creative people experience, such as deadlines, competition, financial struggles, etc.
•suggestions for how to maintain a healthy work/life balance or develop good routines (in creating or just living)
•recipes for healthy or comforting food to eat when you're stressed
•reviews of resources (books, websites, movies, music, podcasts, etc) that you've found to be helpful in staying healthy or reducing stress
•stories of successes or failures in practicing self care
•frustrations or challenges with practicing self care

Submission Guidelines:
Each page of the zine will be 8.5 inches x 11 inches in size. Please format your submission to fit this size. Each page of your submission should be submitted as a separate file. Please leave at least a 1/2 inch border on every page, meaning images and text should be centered on the page and no larger than 7.5" x 10". Please provide us with high quality files, with at least 300dpi/ppi resolution.

The zine will be printed in two colours on the risograph. This means that each colour will need to be printed separately, one after the other with time to dry in between. If you would like to use both colours in your submissions, you can do one of the following: 1) submit each page as a Photoshop file, with each colour on a separate layer (max. two colours/layers). 2) Submit each colour as a separate PDF file. All of your files should be submitted in grayscale. Please title your files/layers as "lighter colour" and "darker colour" so that we know how you would like the contrast of the image to work.
