OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION

The Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to bring back the Illustration Studio Career Launcher for students in their graduating year. Students are invited to apply for this opportunity and four (4) successful applicants will be awarded one year of free studio space in 401 Richmond in from June 2020 to May 2021. 

This is an incredible opportunity to become part of a larger creative community and connect with like-minded creative practitioners. Applications will be reviewed by ILLU Faculty members during GradEx 105.  

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be an undergraduate Illustration major in their graduating year 
  • Must have the intent of remaining in the GTA following graduation to make use of this opportunity

What business skills do I need as an artist or designer?

Understand the practical basics of being self-employed: legal business structures, taxes, contracts, and intellectual property.

  • Workshop 1 - Intro to Business Structures: led by the CEAD, the session will cover legal business structures and how that impacts your practice.
  • Workshop 2 - Tax Considerations for Small Businesses: led by Brian Borts, the session will cover New developments for 2019 taxes, HST - Tips and Traps, RRSP’s vs TFSA’s, Deductibility of Business Expenses, CRA Audits/Review Initiatives.
  • Workshop 3 - Contracting Basics 101: led by Paul Sanderson, the session will cover the importance of contracts, components to include, considerations, and what to do if clients breach the contract.
  • Workshop 4 - Intellectual Property: led by Macy Siu and the CEAD, this interactive session will cover common questions and key challenges.

NEO Exchange, Canada’s next-generation stock exchange, have partnered with OCAD U to co-create the NEO Commissioning Program and the Curatorial Coordinator Career Launcher. Five emerging OCAD U artists, working in a variety of mediums, will be commissioned to provide original works of art to commemorate the listing of a corporate client or the launch of a new fund on the NEO stock exchange. The NEO Commissioning Program is seeking a Curatorial Coordinator to support commissioning-related activities and act as a liaison; leading communications between participating artists, NEO Exchange and its listing clients.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Curatorial Coordinator will participate in:

  • Coordinating and overseeing the commissioning program
  • The final selection of participating artists
  • Ensuring that project deliverables and time lines are met
  • Providing creative oversight and ensuring commissioned artworks are aligned to the client’s creative brief
  • Promoting a connective thematic amongst the range of participating artists and aligning the artwork with the individual listing client
  • Contributing a consistent and knowledgeable curatorial perspective to the overall process
  • Arranging for the photo documentation and delivery of completed artworks

RATE 

  • $5,000 one-time project fee

TERM

  • Part-time freelance contract January 2020 - December 2020 (12 months)

DEADLINE

  • Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 11:59pm (midnight)
  • Note: Interviews with short-listed candidates will be held the weeks of January 27th / February 3rd, 2020

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current OCAD U student or recent OCAD U graduate
  • Experience in curatorial practice or a related field
  • Experience working with artists or artwork/exhibitions management
  • Knowledge of current practices in the proper handling of art works
  • Strong communication skills and professionalism, both verbal and written
  • Strong client management skills• Demonstrated experience with project management and logistics coordination
  • Demonstrated organization and collaborative skills

OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION

OCAD University’s Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers and NEO Exchange, Canada’s next-generation stock exchange, have partnered to co-create the NEO Commissioning Program. Five (5) emerging artists from OCAD U, working in a variety of mediums, will be commissioned to provide works of art to commemorate the listing of a corporate client or the launch of a new fund on the NEO stock exchange.

The NEO Commissioning Program will select and retain five (5) emerging artists, each representing a different artistic practice, providing a diversity of artistic voices and approaches to be showcased in the commissioning program. Working under the guidance of a Curatorial Coordinator and responding to a client creative brief, each artist will be commissioned to produce approximately four (4) original artworks over the course of a 12-month period. Artists will receive $1,200 per commissioned work. Completed works will be prominently bestowed to NEO Exchange clients and be cherished with their corporate art collections.

The commissioned work will be proudly featured in NEO Exchange’s promotion of its new listing via press release, social media and email newsletters. The commissioned work (with artist credit) will be displayed in a gallery of NEO listings online at aequitasneo.com and at NEO Exchange’s office.

DEADLINE

  • Sunday, February 9, 2020 at 11:59pm (midnight)

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Each of the five (5) emerging artists will:

  • Based on receiving the necessary information in a timely manner from NEO Exchange, each of the five (5) emerging artists will ensure that project deliverables are met based on a 4 week approximate timeline
  • Respond to creative oversight provided by the Curatorial Coordinator and the client; ensuring commissioned artworks are aligned to the client’s creative brief
  • Provide initial proposed concepts to the Curatorial Coordinator(sketches, prototypes, etc.)
  • Work with the Curatorial Coordinator to arrange for the photo-documentation and delivery of completed artworks

RATE

  • $1,200 per commissioned work (x4 works)

TERM

  • Part-time freelance contract January 2020 - December 2020 (12 months)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current OCAD U student or recent OCAD U graduate
  • Experience in producing small-to-medium sized works and working within a set budget in a limited time-frame is an asset
  • Previous experience with art commissions is an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Recent OCAD U grad (2019) or current student graduating in spring 2020
  • Strong graphic design experience
  • Proficiency in Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), PowerPoint, and Keynote are required
  • Demonstrated experience designing for at least some of the following mediums: web, social media, video, presentations, events, swag, and print
  • Open to direction, can accept feedback and acts on it; adapts to change
  • Brings a positive attitude and desire to work collaboratively with other members of the communications and studio teams
  • Highly organized with excellent time management skills to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to demonstrate creativity, originality and resourcefulness when searching for solutions

Nice to haves

  • Previous experience in a creative industry considered an asset
  • Familiarity with both PC and Mac environments would be helpful (but not mandatory)
  • Understanding of design within brand guidelines would be considered an asset
  • Passion for the video game industry
  • Basic photography skills would be a plus
  • Illustration skills and/or an interest in illustration would be considered an asset
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere and/or After Effects would be a plus
  • Experience with WordPress (or similar CMS), HTML or CSS considered an asset
