The Toronto Biennial of Art (TBA) is accepting applications for a full-time position of Curatorial Assistant. An ideal candidate must have a view to inclusivity and diversity, building capacity and changing the landscape of future Canadian leaders in arts and culture. The Curatorial Intern will gain significant, hands-on curatorial experience through numerous training and learning opportunities with the Senior Curator and Curator, as well as with the broader TBA team; and cross-departmental exposure to all aspects of the biennial, including logistics, production, publications, finance, communication, partnerships, and fundraising.

On view from September–December 2019, the Toronto Biennial of Art, launching infall 2019, will be Canada’s newest biennial of contemporary art. Taking place along the waterfront in unexpected venues and public spaces and in collaboration with not-for-profit galleries, museums, community organizations, and educational institutions across the city, the Biennial will present Canadian and international art within the complex creative, cultural, social, and political context of Toronto.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supporting the curatorial team in all aspects of their projects, including: conception, research, implementation, programming, artists visits, etc.
  • Supporting the education team with programming when relevant and as needed.
  • Conducting curatorial research for the curatorial team.
  • Supporting artists directly in the implementation of their projects as needed.
  • Assisting with welcoming artists to Toronto: on-boarding, welcome package, navigating the city, etc.
  • Providing production and coordination support to the curatorial and production teams as needed: installation and striking, contractor prep and coordination, equipment research, etc.
  • Providing administrative support to the curatorial team and managing daily tasks as they arise, as well as acting as an advocate for and providing tours of the Biennial.
  • Assisting all aspects of TBA events: preparation, setup, strike down, post-event reports, and etc.
  • Acting as an advocate for and providing tours of the Biennial.
  • Numerous training and learning opportunities with the Senior Curator and Curator, as well as with the broader TBA team.
  • Cross-departmental exposure to all aspects of the biennial, including logistics, production, publications, finance, communication, partnerships, and fundraising.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCADU in 2017 or 2018.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience incuratorial, museum studies, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated understanding of digital communications and marketing platforms.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated organization and project management skills.
  • Required: MAC OS; Microsoft OS; Microsoft Office Suite; Adobe Creative Suite; email.
  • Assets: Sketchup; languages spoken other than English; ability to manage engaging visual content for digital platforms, including websites, video and social media; Driver’s Licence.

This position will help support and build the organization’s presentation and education initiatives. The Programming and Outreach Assistant will work within allocated budgets as well as identify potential external funding sources, including partnerships, collaborations, cultural agencies, foundations, and others-to supplement existing resources where possible. 

Trinity Square Video is a not-for-profit artist run centre and exhibition space. Since 1971, Trinity Square Video has supported community organizations and artists from diverse backgrounds whose practice incorporates the use of electronic moving images in their work, by commissioning, exhibiting, training and making equipment and integration services available. 

Trinity Square Video produces work and is situated on the traditional and unceded territories of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, the Huron-Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nations. Trinity Square Video is committed to inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility in representing and recognizing the community it serves.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCADU in 2017 or 2018 
  • Must be interested in assorted media-art practices including single, multi-channel, interactive, VR/AR/XR, projection mapping, etc. 
  • Must be interested in curatorial or programming activities (technical knowledge in media-based equipment and installation is an asset) 
  • Must be interested in community engagement and outreach 
  • Must have superior organizational skills and written communicational skills, for the purpose of exhibition and marketing texts, grant application, and social media

Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers now located in 115 McCaul

OCAD U is pleased to announce the Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers (CEAD) has moved into its new, expanded offices on Level 3 of the Experiential Learning Centre in the Rosalie Sharp Pavilion at 115 McCaul Street. 

Over the summer and early autumn, the CEAD developed an expanded scope of activities to increase opportunities to help students and recent graduates succeed in the world of work. Their new space in the Experiential Learning Centre means they are now ready to facilitate this new programming: finding creative jobs and learning placements, special events and programs, professional mentorship and networking opportunities. The new space also includes presentation areas and workspace for employment partners, students and recent grads, as well as for visiting artists, designers and entrepreneurs who are collaborating with students.

While there remain a few finishing touches to be completed, the OCAD U community is welcome to stop in, say hi, meet the staff, learn about the latest opportunities, and check out the new CEAD facilities!

Yonge-Dundas Square and the Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers are excited to announce the Yonge-Dundas Square Career Launcher providing exhibition opportunity to two (2) screen-based projects by recent OCADU graduates. The exhibitions will take place across five (5) digital screens: two horizontal (960 x 480 pixels) and three vertical (448 x 608 pixels) on the Square, and will last through February 2019. Successful applicant(s) will also receive artist fees provided by the CEAD. 

Yonge-Dundas Square is a unique focal point of the downtown Toronto community. The Square is designated for use as a public open space and as an event venue that can accommodate events of various sizes. The Yonge-Dundas Square is a 1 acre outdoor public and event space at the intersection of Yonge Street and Dundas Street. The Square draws visitors from across the city and around the world bringing a vibrant energy to the neighbourhood through dynamic events and programming. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCAD U in 2017 or 2018 
  • Must have a substantial screen-based practice with a focus on dynamic, moving images, and/or animation 
  • Proposals for multi-channel presentation are highly encouraged 
  • Proposal must follow the YDS Display Policy available here 
  • Proposal must follow the regulations City of Toronto’s Municipal Code Chapter 694 - 18, E, (4) and (5) available here

BIO

Mahmood Popal is an Afghan - Canadian, Toronto based multi-disciplinary artist and designer. Popal graduated from OCAD University in 2007 with a focus on Industrial design and fine art. In 2011 Popal launched his creative studio, MAAST, that focuses on commercial interior design projects, private commissions and public art projects. The studio has worked on a wide range of projects for Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), Sub-zero-Wolf, Sid Lee, Metrolinx, City of Toronto, East End Arts, Google, Capital One, Achievers, Konrad Group, Embrace, HERSHEY- REESE’S, Ford, Belair Direct, Think Tank Creative, Robarts Spaces China, The Stop Community Food Centre, Mile Inn and Apollo Studios.

We invite students to schedule meetings with the current Creative Professionals-In-Residence to engage in activities such as portfolio reviews, career advising, informational conversations, and on-campus studio visits. Students can set up a time with the residents by contacting Shellie Zhang, Community Animator at the Centre for Emerging Artists and Designers, or by a drop-in basis depending on availability. We also welcome opportunities to connect the residents through classes and curriculum. 

ABOUT THE CREATIVE PROFESSIONAL-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The new OCAD U Creative Professionals-In-Residence program is a mentorship initiative created to support the career success of current OCAD U students and recent alumni. It is also an opportunity to facilitate community and relationship building for emerging artists and designers. The Creative Professionals-In-Residence program sees invited professional guests, from a variety of art and design-related disciplines, present on a regularly scheduled basis over the course of the academic semester, in the new Rosalie Sharp Pavilion for Experiential Learning at 115 McCaul Street. Visiting creative professionals are alumni of OCAD University, invited to provide mentorship to current OCAD U students and recent alumni.

This fall’s residents are David Salazar and Mahmood Popal.
