OCAD University Drawing and Painting grad, Chaewon Kim, winner of Scotiabank’s Dream Office REIT’s competition, celebrated the unveiling of her installation, ALL TOGETHER HERE, at a reception on June 1. The winning installation is displayed in the main lobby of Scotia Plaza, an iconic AAA office tower located at 40 King St. W. in Toront

Organized by Scotiabank Canada’s largest international bank and Dream Office Reit, one of Canada’s largest real estate companies, graduating students from the Faculty of Art were invited to submit proposals for art installations that represent diversity, equality and inclusion, that may have an LGBT+ edge. Competitors were encouraged to create impact-driven projects that would deliver an emotional benefit to the community, customers and employees.

Born and raised in South Korea, Kim recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Drawing and Painting. Her winning entry, ALL TOGETHER HERE, explores the value of diversity, equality and inclusion. The judging panel was comprised of representatives from Scotiabank, DREAM Office Reit and OCAD University.

“This installation [is intended] to represent the empathy of multiculturalism in Canada,” says Kim. “In addition, the installation explores the aesthetic value through the symbolic colours of diversity: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.”

Kim specializes in painting, sculpture, mural and relief printmaking.  She describes her style as “a fusion of vivid colours influenced by fauvism, and [the use of] quick gestural marking or aggressive paint handling.” She has worked as a studio assistant for Toronto-based, Korean-born sculptor Won Lee for the past six years.

Over the years, Scotiabank has developed external and internal-facing campaigns to show support for the LGBT+ community, employees and customers. The impact of the bank’s efforts to demonstrate commitment to inclusion and diversity is increasing with synergies created with internal and external partners. After last year’s events and engagement campaigns, the Scotiabank team was approached by Dream Office Reit to explore synergies in 2017 for the creation of a public art installation or design display to celebrate diversity and inclusion.
