OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION

Gallery 44 is a dynamic space and a leading artist-run centre led by a dedicated group of artists, curators and educators, currently seeking a Curatorial Assistant in partnership with OCAD U Career Launchers. Reporting jointly to the Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs and the Curator of Education and Community Outreach, the Curatorial Assistant will contribute to the development and realization of gallery exhibitions, workshops, and adjacent programming.

The Curatorial Assistant will work directly with artists, guest curators, artist-educators, designers, and Gallery 44 staff. This 30-hour per week position will run from March 9 to June 26, 2020. The role is positioned to offer an emerging curator an opportunity to gain hands-on, working knowledge of exhibitions, publications, public and educational programs, in a fast-paced environment, and amongst a collegial staff-team of five early-career arts professionals.

RATE

  • $18/hour for 30 hours/week (4 days)

TERM

  • March 9 to June 26, 2020 (16 weeks)

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Exhibitions and Public Programs (70%)
    • Assist with the planning, logistics, and implementation of exhibitions in the Main Gallery and Vitrines, including exhibitions in partnership with Images Festival (March 2020) and CONTACT Festival (May 2020).
    • Assist with the planning, implementation and promotion of additional public programs, such as artist talks, exhibition tours, and reading groups.
    • Contribute to exhibition catalogue production and assist with copyediting texts.
    • Maintain timely communications with artists, installers and community partners, monitor work back and production schedules, and ensure that various deadlines are met.
    • Assist with the facilitation of equipment and artwork shipping/ transportation for exhibitions and public programs.
    • Support exhibition installation and strike, which may include some lifting, art handling, and packing (led by the gallery’s installation technician).
    • Support the planning and delivery of opening reception events
    • Other administrative duties as needed
  • Education and Community Outreach (30%)
    • Assist with the planning and logistics, including registration and supply purchases for adult educational workshops, both technical and conceptual in scope.
    • Assist with the planning and delivery of youth programs, including OUTREACH, Gallery 44’s award-winning education program addressing the needs of underserved youth from throughout the GTA, and Photomagic 44, an analog photography camp for youth.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be an OCAD U graduate from 2019 or 2020
  • Strong communication skills and professionalism, verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated research and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience with project management and logistics coordination
  • A good attention to detail, timekeeping and organizational skills
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite. MAC iOS.
  • Website management experience
  • Experience in writing and editing exhibition texts, including essays and interviews, is an asset
  • Experience with photo-production, including darkroom, is an asset

The Toronto Biennial of Art (TBA) is accepting applications for a full-time position of Curatorial Assistant on the Public Programming and Learning team. An ideal candidate must have a view to inclusivity and diversity, building capacity and changing the landscape of future Canadian leaders in arts, education and culture. The Curatorial Assistant will gain significant, hands-on curatorial, programming and production experience through numerous training and learning opportunities with the Curator, Public Programming and Learning, as well as with the broader TBA team; and cross-departmental exposure to all aspects of the biennial, including logistics, production, publications, finance, communication, partnerships, and fundraising.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supporting the Public Programming and Learning team in all aspects of their projects, including: conception, research, liaising with collaborating organisations and individuals, production, implementation, scheduling, artists’ visits, etc.
  • Providing production and coordination support to the Public Programming and Learning team and production team as needed: installation and striking, event prep and coordination, equipment and service provider research, etc. 
  • Supporting artists, educators, scholars, and other program leaders directly in the implementation of their projects as needed.
  • Assisting with welcoming artists to Toronto as needed: on-boarding, welcome package, navigating the city, etc.Supporting the Public Programming and Learning team in liaising with Biennial partners and venues, and ensuring that venue partners are fully briefed on schedules, installation plans and program requirements.
  • Providing administrative support to the Public Programming and Learning team and managing daily tasks as they arise.
  • Assisting all aspects of TBA events: preparation, setup, strike down, post-event reports, etc.
  • Acting as an advocate and mediator for the Biennial as needed.

RATE: $16.5/ hour for 35 hours/ week

TERM: Full-time, March 2019 - March 2020

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCADU in 2017 or 2018.
  • Experience in curatorial, museum studies, or related fields.
  • Commitment to: community engagement; generating and nurturing deep and prolonged ties to various audiences; working intersectionally and intergenerationally through community-responsive and site-specific programming.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrated organization and project coordination skills
  • Required: MAC OS; Microsoft OS; Microsoft Office Suite; Adobe Creative Suite; email.
  • Assets: SketchUp; languages spoken other than English; ability to manage engaging visual content for digital platforms, including websites, video and social media; Driver’s Licence; engagement with art education programs and/or community organisational work; familiarity with accessibility coordination for public programming.

The Curatorial Intern will gain significant, hands-on curatorial experience through numerous training and learning opportunities with the Senior Curator and Curator, as well as with the broader TBA team; and cross-departmental exposure to all aspects of the biennial, including logistics, production, publications, finance, communication, partnerships, and fundraising.

On view from September–December 2019, the Toronto Biennial of Art, launching infall 2019, will be Canada’s newest biennial of contemporary art. Taking place along the waterfront in unexpected venues and public spaces and in collaboration with not-for-profit galleries, museums, community organizations, and educational institutions across the city, the Biennial will present Canadian and international art within the complex creative, cultural, social, and political context of Toronto.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supporting the curatorial team in all aspects of their projects, including: conception, research, implementation, programming, artists visits, etc.
  • Supporting the education team with programming when relevant and as needed.
  • Conducting curatorial research for the curatorial team.
