Many of us are curious about the unknown, wonder about all that glimmers in the firelight. Something magical preys on those of us who have wandering minds. This is the place of folklore.

Fascinated with monsters and magic since she was a young child, as most of us are, Julia did not grow up and away from this fairy-tale mind. If anything, she grew more deeply committed to the “enchanted” story as a writer, an illustrator, and a translator of the emotions and thoughts.

Julia removed the hypersexualization that plagues the classic stories of the satyr, the selkie and the dryad and gave them room to breathe, space to become all of the things little girls wish they could be. Each one of these creatures became the embodiment of these reworked ideas and dreams.

This series was born as a semi-collaborative piece for her art collective Carpos Collective’s debut show. Using reference images of themselves, these posters became modeled after the co-founders of the collective. The screen-printed versions of the illustrations were a labour of love among the three artists. They worked as a unit in a makeshift studio to print 90+ copies of the art. Inspired by Julia's work, and the folktales that captured their hearts, Shirls and Joyce have created art in response which is also presented at this exhibition.

Julia Pereira is an illustrator whose work focuses on telling compelling stories through images and engaging her audience in emotionally and politically engaging designs. In her exhibit, for CWSE Hallway Gallery she re-frames myths by providing us with open narratives that challenge us to question our deepest fears, desires and beliefs.   Julia is currently attending OCAD University, majoring in Illustration and minoring in Creative Writing, and is an Associate Director and Designer for WIAprojects.
