How to get a dream graphic design job

Tom Briggs has a dream job. The OCAD University Graphic Design grad is a senior designer for Cervélo, a Toronto-based bicycle manufacturer. This year, he designed the new paint job for team MTN-Qhubeka, the first African team in the Tour de France. On top of that, he spent this past July travelling on the Tour shooting promotional videos.

Unbelievable, it's honestly a dream come true,” says Tom. “I was able to design one bike for last year’s Tour that was ridden by Sebastian Langeveld (the Dutch national champion at the time), but to do a whole team's fleet of bikes is something entirely different. Also, with MTN Qhubeka being the first African team to ever participate in the Tour's 102-year history, I feel like it's an honour to be involved in something so historic.”

Tom’s top three tips to landing your dream graphic design job

1. Content is invaluable. If you're passionate about the content you're creating you'll produce the best work of your life. Pushing pixels in Illustrator or Photoshop will hold your interest for a while, but the content really is what wins out at the end of the day so try and put yourself in the best position you can to work on something you love.

2. The people around you will influence your path as much as you will. Surround yourself with people you admire and who produce work you engage with. These connections will go a long way in helping you find what you want to do.

3. Work hard. I know everyone says this but, at the end of the day, it's up to you to make the choice to work until midnight or watch TV. Believe me, I spend my fair share of time being lazy just like everyone else. But, if there is a project that is important to you make sure you take full advantage of those opportunities, and don't stop until you are completely happy with the results.

OCAD University alumnus designs look of Tour de France bikes

Thursday, July 9, 2015 - 4:00am

Tom Briggs (BDes, Graphic Design, 2011) is watching his latest design project speed through the twists and turns of the Tour de France. The senior designer for Cervélo, a Toronto-based bicycle manufacturer, Briggs has designed the new paint job for team MTN-Qhubeka – the first African-registered team in the Tour’s history.

The bicycles’ paint job is an eye-catching chrome and yellow, with accent colours of the South African flag: blue, green, yellow, red and black. Briggs says one of the challenges of designing the look was working with the organic shape and design of the Cervélo bikes. “To find a completely flat surface is near impossible, so working with that and understanding the physical limitation of both paint and decal production and application was a tough balancing act.”

Across the top tube of each model are words that translate the Ngoni word Qhubeka: “Move Forward,” “Carry On” and “Progress.” Qhubeka is the World Bicycle Relief’s program in South Africa, which is dedicated to advancing education, health and economic opportunities by providing specially designed, locally assembled bikes to people in need.

Ordinarily, Briggs works out of Cervélo’s head office in Toronto, but he also journeys all over the world filming and art directing. He is currently travelling with the MTN-Qhubeka team on the Tour shooting promotional videos.

Briggs says at OCAD U he learned to become adaptable and take risks. “I thought I wanted to make magazines and I've done that professionally, but I also feel I can take on things like working with 3D objects in the form of a bike and be successful there. My education gave me the mindset that you can take risks and, as long as you work as hard as you can, you can make whatever you want to make.”

Ontario Centres of Excellence highlight Revelo’s success

Monday, October 27, 2014 - 7:00pm

Henry Chong and his startup company Revelo Electric are featured in the annual report put out by the Ontario Centres of Excellence.

Chong’s concept for the bike came from his undergraduate Industrial Design thesis project and was further developed at the Imagination Catalyst, OCAD U’s entrepreneurship incubator.

Chong's current model, the LE-1 e-bike, is a chainless, street-legal e-bike that folds easily. The bike can travel 30 kilometres with a single charge of its lithium battery. The Ontario Centres of Excellence invested $143,000 in Chong’s business, which he hopes to grow to 20 employees in the next two years.
