OCAD U celebrates Earth Hour!

Saturday, March 25, 2017

OCAD U is keeping the lights on. For 24 hours on March 25, 2017, OCAD U is Bullfrog Powered with 100% green electricity in celebration of Earth Hour.

This means that Bullfrog Power's generators put 100% green power onto the grid to match the amount of conventional electricity the campus uses, displacing energy from polluting sources. Across Canada, Bullfrog's green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.

What is OCAD U's impact? For the 41.920 MWh of green electricity purchased for the entire campus for March 25, the emission reductions are 6.707 CO2e.

41.920 MWh is more than 1,500 homes' electricity consumption for a day!

To determine more environmental equivalencies related to emissions reduction, you can go to the EPA's carbon equivalency calculator. Plug 6.707 tonnes into the "CO2 - Carbon Dioxide or CO2 Equivalent" field to find some interesting comparisons!

OCAD participates in Earth Hour 2008

Sunday, March 30, 2008 - 12:00am to 1:00am

OCAD will power down on Saturday, March 29, 2008, for one hour starting at 8 pm, as part of Earth Hour 2008.

Earth Hour originated as an event in Sydney, Australia last year, as businesses and households turned off their lights for one hour to send a powerful national and global message that it’s possible to take action on global warming.

This year Earth Hour has become a global opportunity to take a stand on the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, as millions of people unit to turn the tide on global warming. OCAD is proud to participate, and will do so by turning off all lights and powering down all non-essential equipment in order to make the most impact towards reducing energy consumption.

Earth Hour is an event everyone can participate in—at home, at work, at school—anywhere. Simply turn out the lights on Saturday, March 29, for an hour, at 8 pm. To learn more about how you can live a more sustainable lifestyle, or sign up for the challenge, visit the Earth Hour website.

Earth Hour boosted to 24 hours

OCAD University is doing things differently this Earth Hour.

Since 2009, Facilities Management has employed electricians to power down the lights in classrooms, studios and offices for Earth Hour. But the reality is it takes a lot longer than an hour to complete the task, and it can cost about $750 in labour. And, now that OCAD University’s facilities are open 24/7, if we took that approach this year the inconvenience to students would be substantial.

Facilities Management is, instead, teaming up with the Sustainability Committee to invest $1,200 in clean-energy generation through Bullfrog Power. As a result, the entire OCAD U campus will be carbon-neutral for 24 hours!

The Sustainability Committee welcomes ideas that support social wellness and ecological responsibility. Please email Cathy Cappon, Manager, ODESI, with your input.
