This annual event features homemade robots in a variety of competitions: tug of war, dancer/painter, autonomous and full out, head to head combat! Long before robot wars and other similar robotic events that are commonplace today, the SUMO Robot Challenge features OCAD artists, designers, local high school students and the general public pitted against each other in competitions that push the limits of their imaginations, electronic, mechanical and fabrication skills. Begun in 1992, the SUMO Robot Challenge is an adrenalin-packed event that is not to be missed! Open to the OCAD community and the general public. All proceeds raised from the event go towards scholarships for OCAD students.

Community gathers to support Lifeline Syria

People standing by a podium
Wednesday, December 2, 2015 - 4:45pm

November’s Lifeline Syria fundraiser and silent auction expressed OCAD University's efforts as part of the Lifeline Syria Challenge, in concert with our sister universities in the GTA. The event on November 27 involved an impressive 20 volunteers and 40 contributing artists, with a total of 50 works put up for auction.

More than a hundred students staff and faculty came together to share stories, enjoy a meal and raise awareness about the refugee crisis. They also raised money: approximately $3,000 over the course of four hours.

Several guests spoke at the event: Deanne Fisher, Associate Vice-President, Students; Professor Nabil Harfoush (who talked about his experiences as a Syrian immigrant to Canada); Martin Ginsherman, a resettlement volunteer, former refugee justice and the parent of an OCAD U student; and Pablo Munoz, an Industrial Design student who also donated a print for the auction.

The afternoon was made possible through the amazing efforts of the Impact Collective team, OCADSU and Jay Ginsherman, Bianca Channer, Sharene Shafie, Madison Leeson and Dana Prieto. A highlights for guests was the delicious curry, kibbeh, salad, sambusak, sweets and more prepared by a team of volunteer cooks that included: Nadia Zoobi Shafey, Najah El-Zoobi, Rima Hanbali, Mona Saab, Ghada Algabi, Amana Sanjakdar, Hanna Husamaldin, Mona Alkari, Fatoon Alkari, Radieh Moussa and Zarina Decambre.

Girls’ Art League (GAL) is a Toronto-based art centre with the mission of empowering girls and women through the visual arts. Girls of all artistic abilities, socio-economic backgrounds, and lived experiences should have the opportunity to develop and exercise their artistic voice. We believe that this artistic voice and an empowered creative practice is cultivated when we connect, share, and learn from each other.

We provide the knowledge and resources for girls and women (GALs) to develop their artistic practice, express themselves visually, and build artistic confidence - all within a safe and supportive environment. Our team of artists and educators teach a variety of 2D, 3D, and time-based mediums, and present direct connections to successful female artists working today. GAL offers these teaching through regular 8-week courses, workshops, artist talks, self-directed learning programs, and mentorship programs. We are dedicated to building a vital community of girls and women interested in the arts in Toronto.

We are looking to continue the programming that was so successful last year. We would like to reach out to further social service organizations, and offer art education to women and girls who otherwise would not have access to such programming. Last year we offered workshops to Sheena’s Place (women affected by eating disorders), Gilda’s Club (women affected by cancer), Working Women Community Centre, Central Toronto Youth Services and other such organizations. We would like to expand this program, as well as provide weekly courses for women and girls. These programs, and rent for a space to host weekly courses are costly, and your art donations will help make this all possible!

MESH’s Art Exhibition Fundraiser

MESH logo
Saturday, November 14, 2015 - 12:00am to 4:00am

The inspiration for MESH comes from the idea of bringing all kinds of people together from different backgrounds, practices and walks of life. This exhibition will “MESH” the unique individuals of both the Faculty of Art and Design, giving students a platform to showcase their talents as well as working together to raise money for a greater cause. This will be your chance, your platform to speak and be seen. We are looking for creative artists looking to change the world and address the social issues of today with their innovative ideas. We're looking for art that reflects raw human emotions and narratives. Art related to isolation, change, war, lost hope, confusion, compassion and anything related to what the Syrian refugees must feel being displaced from their homeland. We want to have everyone embrace Canada's decision to welcome these refugees through showing the reality of what is happening in their world. It will be a grand social event with music, performances, drinks and fun! Let's all celebrate life. The proceeds from this event (as well as fees) will be donated to Syrian refugees displaced in this current world crisis. It is optional for artists/vendors to donate some of their profits for the cause, but it is encouraged. It is crucial for us to come together and help those in need in any way possible. If you can't make it, we welcome donations online. SHOW Friday, November 13, 7 to 11 p.m. (49 McCaul) For any questions or inquiries please direct them to meshsubmissions@gmail.com
