PROJECT 31 ARTWORKS TREASURED BY COLLECTORS

Storm Breaking/Grand Prairie, 2007 by Rae Johnson

A grand total of 42 new works by OCAD U’s award-winning faculty were on the block March 27 for the university’s highly anticipated annual auction. In its fifth year, Project 31 is popular among collectors, who see the event as an opportunity to obtain valuable works and support the university at the same time.

“We are the custodians of a wonderful body of work, and have purchased several pieces at Project 31,” said Peter Milligan, a Toronto collector, who together with his wife, OCAD U alumna Doreen MacAulay Milligan, collects works by OCAD U faculty and Project 31 donors John Scott, Barbara Astman and Rae Johnson, among others. “I enjoy seeing all the wonderful work and while it’s fun to be there, it’s more than having a few drinks and canapés. It’s an opportunity to recognize the abilities of OCAD U faculty and support students.”

Milligan’s Project 31 purchases include Johnson’s “Storm Breaking/Grand Prairie, 2007” and John Scott’s “Uncle Schlomo,” which hang in his loft. An enthusiastic collector, he enjoys admiring and observing the works every day. “I’ve been aware of Scott and awed by his inspiration,” Milligan said. “He challenges you intellectually, emotionally and philosophically, and Ray Johnson is brilliant. ‘Storm Breaking’ is extraordinary.”

Ernie Kerr, whose Project 31 purchases have included a Stephen Appleby-Barr as well as two works by Gordon Peteran and one by Cathy Daley, enjoys the annual event and supporting the OCAD U student community too, though notes another dimension of the event that makes it exciting. “It’s an opportunity to obtain works by up-and-coming artists,” he said, describing how works purchased at the auction can, over the years, increase in value.

OCAD U faculty members donate their work to Project 31, and proceeds from the auction go to support specific areas of need of their choosing, such as student scholarships, awards, bursaries, equipment, models and materials. The event features a wide range of collectable works at various price points, which makes it popular among OCAD U supporters and collectors, whether they’re beginning a collection or are seasoned art enthusiasts.

Project 31 offers up OCAD faculty works in support of programs, students

Thursday, February 25, 2010 - 7:30pm

(Toronto — February 25, 2010) The Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) is betting the month of March will go out like a lion as it launches its exciting new fundraising initiative, Project 31.

Acclaimed members of the university faculty have donated 31 works of art and design, which will be unveiled on a daily basis throughout the month, culminating in a live auction celebration on Wednesday, March 31.

What makes the event unique is how the funds will be directed. “Each faculty member who generously donated to Project 31 is directing the proceeds from the sale of that work to a specific area of need at OCAD,” explains Jessica Kamphorst, Executive Director of Development & Alumni Relations, and President of the OCAD Foundation. “Donating faculty members have determined that funds will help to increase, among other things, live model hours for Illustration students; professional development funds for faculty; program-specific scholarships; and the OCAD library and Learning Zone. Some of our faculty have also chosen to donate proceeds to our Student Assistance Challenge, which provides valuable support to students in the form of non-repayable bursaries."

OCAD’s highly regarded Florence Off-Campus Studies program will also receive a financial boost through Project 31. Also set to benefit are International Student Entrance Scholarships, and OCAD program areas such as Drawing & Painting, Photography and Integrated Media.

“The works in the sale have been selected through a jury of faculty members, curators and collectors, and close to half of them are valued at over $3,000, representing a significant injection of funds to OCAD operations and student support,” said Kamphorst. “This is a rare opportunity to obtain works by Canada’s most renowned artists and designers who teach, mentor and inspire OCAD students, and set an example of excellence and achievement. Through our faculty community’s incredible generosity, we’re thrilled to be able to make these works available for purchase, and to be able to direct the proceeds to areas dear to their hearts.”

A month-long digital experience, Project 31 will unveil a new work each day of March online at www.ocad.ca/project31. “Think of it as an advent calendar for the month of March,” said Kamphorst. Live auction ticket-holders will receive a copy of the full-colour catalogue as part of their ticket purchase. Tickets for the March 31 auction can be purchased online at the Project 31 website for $95.

Bloor-Yorkville presents an innovative fundraiser that brings together the worlds of contemporary art and winemaking

Bloor-Yorkville presents an innovative fundraiser that brings together the worlds of contemporary art and winemaking
Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - 4:00am

“Art of the Barrel” artwork to be on display in Bloor-Yorkville neighbourhood then auctioned off for OCAD and Casey House
(Toronto—April 28, 2010) Bloor-Yorkville Business Improvement Area is thrilled to present “Art of the Barrel,” a collaborative fundraiser that brings together the worlds of contemporary art and the art of fine winemaking in support of the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) and Casey House.

Twelve iconic wooden wine barrels have been transformed into exciting works of contemporary art by senior students from OCAD’s Faculty of Art, and will be displayed in the Bloor-Yorkville neighbourhood from May 10 to 26 in anticipation of the Grand Finale and Auction on Thursday, May 27.

“Bloor-Yorkville has a long history of culinary and charitable events such as Toronto Taste and most recently IceFest, which raised significant funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario,” says Briar de Lange, General Manager of the Bloor-Yorkville Business Improvement Area. “This unique fundraiser that links art and winemaking while supporting emerging artists and people living with HIV/AIDS, is the kind of event Bloor-Yorkville is proud to support.”

Mark S. Bonham, a leading supporter of Casey House and OCAD and the former owner of Stoney Ridge Estate Winery, is the driving force behind this creative initiative. Bonham donated the aged oak wine barrels, and contributed funds for an OCAD scholarship.

“Art is an ideal way to bring people together in support of an idea or a cause,” says Bonham, Chair of Art of the Barrel. “Art of the Barrel can raise awareness for the ongoing issue of HIV/AIDS and provide a platform for emerging artists to display their creativity. As a fundraising initiative, this is a unique opportunity for art patrons to acquire original artworks that will demonstrate their passion for art, wine and vital heathcare and cultural programs in our community.”

The Barrel Art
Internationally renowned Canadian artist John Scott, an alumnus and instructor at OCAD, created the first barrel prototype. Scott has been at the forefront of Canadian contemporary art for nearly two decades and his work is much sought after by museums and galleries across the country.

Talented fourth-year students at OCAD competed for the opportunity to participate by submitting proposals, and twelve successful teams or individuals were selected to create their barrels for evaluation by an esteemed jury. Each finalist received a $1,000 award in order to create a barrel artwork. The winning design will receive a $5,000 grand prize, with additional $1,500 prizes available.

“I’ve seen the conceptual drawings for these barrels and I was struck by the extraordinary flights of imagination and creativity displayed,” says Tony Aspler, Honorary Patron of Art of the Barrel. “The twelve sculptures are a testament to the skills of Canada’s next generation of artists. They have made us look more closely at the components, as they have disassembled the wooden staves and steel hoops to draw life lessons from these workaday materials.”

The jury includes Anda Kubis, Chair of Drawing & Painting, Faculty of Art, OCAD; Ann MacDonald, Director, Curator Doris McCarthy Gallery; artist Brendan Flanagan; Francis LeBouthillier, Chair of Sculpture/Installation, Faculty of Art, OCAD; George Yabu, Yabu Pushelberg Design; Linda Book, Director, Drabinsky Gallery; Perry Tung, Perry Tung Contemporary; Tom Deacon, AREA Design Inc.

More information on the artists, their designs and their statements can be found at www.artofthebarrel.com.

The Art of Fundraising

Several barrels have already been acquired by art patrons and corporate sponsors, but a public auction will be held on Thursday, May 27, where art patrons may bid on the stunning original works of art.

Save the date for OCAD U’s Project 31 art auction

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 - 5:00am

(Toronto—January 24, 2012) OCAD University will launch Toronto's art auction season with its third annual Project 31 fundraiser in support of art and design students and programs.

One of the city's most accessible art collecting events, Project 31 is a live art auction, held on Thursday, March 29, offering up stunning paintings, photography, limited edition prints, sculpture, textiles and fibre, illustration, jewellery and digital media by OCAD U's talented faculty members, and a few specially invited guests.

What makes the event unique is how Project 31 pairs the support of donating faculty members with specific areas of need at the university.

"We have faculty members who donate the proceeds from the sale of their work toward program-specific scholarships, awards or bursaries for students," says OCAD U Vice-President, Academic and Acting President Sarah McKinnon. "Others choose to direct proceeds toward our library and Learning Zone, our Florence Off-Campus Studies Program, live model hours, or investments of new equipment for specific programs." Since its inception, Project 31 has raised more than $150,000 to support areas of need at the university. "We're very grateful for our community's incredible generosity, and to be able to direct the proceeds from their donations to areas close to their hearts."

The auction a great place for budding art collectors to score great buys, with works selling very affordably anywhere from a few hundred dollars to under $10,000. Through the auction, patrons are able to access work by OCAD U's award-winning faculty members - a pool of creative talent found nowhere else in Canada - while enriching the learning experience for the next generation of artists and designers.
