OCAD University announces Carole Beaulieu as Vice-President, Advancement & Board Secretariat

OCAD University has appointed Carole Beaulieu as Vice-President, Advancement & Board Secretariat. Beaulieu will lead an amalgamation of the portfolios of Capital Campaign/Development, University Relations and Board Secretariat. This new role will enable the integration of public and private fundraising to achieve the next stage of OCAD University’s fundraising campaign, to align marketing and communications and to further the Board of Governors’ external engagement.

Originally from Sudbury, Beaulieu is an accomplished management, marketing, public affairs and governance executive. In her previous role of Associate Vice-President, University Relations, Beaulieu spearheaded OCAD U’s successful initiative to achieve $27M in Government of Ontario funding for the Creative City Campus.

Nominations open for student positions on the Board of Governors & Senate

Nominations are now being accepted for several student positions on the OCAD University Board of Governors and the Senate.

Be a part of the two governing bodies that oversee how your OCAD University is operated. Like two chambers of a heart, the Board of Governors and Senate, have their own beats to pump the lifeblood into your University. Join in this integral leading function of your University!

Eligible candidates may submit nomination for these positions until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2016.

Student positions available are:

Board of Governors

  • Two (2) Undergraduate Student positions, each for a two-year term.

Senate

  • One (1) Graduate Student Senator position for a one-year term.
  • Three (3) Undergraduate Student Senator positions, one from each Faculty, each for a one-year term.

Dr. Gillian Siddall appointed Vice-President, Academic and Provost

OCAD University has appointed Dr. Gillian Siddall as Vice-President, Academic and Provost, effective July 1, 2016. Reporting to and working closely with the President as a member of the executive team, Siddall is responsible for the overall academic enterprise of the university, including academic planning and the academic priorities of the university’s strategic plan. She is actively providing direction for academic relations, leading the revision of the Institutional Quality Assurance Process (IQAP) and serving as Vice-Chair of Senate.

Siddall holds an Honours BA and MA from the University of Guelph in English, as well as a PhD from the University of Western Ontario, with a dissertation titled “‘Two Kinds of Geography’: Complicity and Resistance in Canadian Pioneer Literature.” Prior to joining OCAD U as Interim Vice-President, Academic, she was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Lakehead University, following prior roles as founding Director of Lakehead’s Instructional Development Centre and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in English. With a significant record of publication and research grants, she has extensive undergraduate and graduate teaching experience at Lakehead University, where she was appointed as a member of the English Department in 1998. Siddall is also a jazz vocalist and has published extensively on the topic of musical improvisation, both within and outside a literary context. Her latest book, co-edited with Dr. Ellen Waterman and published this spring by Duke University Press, is entitled Negotiated Moments: Improvisation, Sound, and Subjectivity.

“Gillian’s outstanding commitment to the arts and arts education, together with her deeply collaborative approach, will advance the academic planning process she is leading at OCAD U, nurturing and developing faculty and academic leaders,” said Dr. Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor, OCAD University. “I am delighted to have Gillian as OCAD University’s Vice-President, Academic and Provost.”

In her role, Siddall will provide direction and support to the faculties of Art, Design, and Liberal Arts & Sciences, as well as Graduate Studies, the OCAD University Senate and its standing committees, the Centre for Innovation in Art & Design Education, and the departmental areas of Library Services and Student Affairs. She will oversee OCAD University’s initiatives in experiential and online learning.

New members join OCAD University’s Board of Governors

OCAD University welcomes Dr. Myrna Francis and Daniel Sawaya as external members of its Board of Governors. Francis and Sawaya were appointed by the Government of Ontario, each for a three-year term effective April 6, 2016.

“These new members of our board bring with them extensive experience in both the private and public sectors, as well as expertise in business incubation in health and technology,” said Dr. Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor of OCAD University. “We are fortunate to have them join us at a time when the university is experiencing tremendous growth and expansion through the Ignite Imagination campaign.”

Daniel Sawaya: Founder & CEO, AyaWas Investment Group

Daniel Sawaya’s career spans more than 25 years with general management and functional hands-on experience across several industries. Today, he is founder and CEO of the AyaWas Investment Group, a private investment firm focused on providing advisory and financing services to early-stage and mid-size companies in information and communications technology, financial services, consumer products and retail. Sawaya is also an active advisor at MaRS Discovery District and is involved in a series of technology incubators across North America.

Sawaya has served on boards of directors in both the private and public sector, was chair of the Canada Post United Way Foundation and volunteered as a mentor at the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Myrna Francis: President, Mfran Enterprises Inc.
Dr. Myrna Francis’s career spans more than 25 years of experience in the health-care and technology industries. She provides strategic advice to both public-sector and multi-national private-sector companies focused on health information technology (IT), commercialization of Internet 2.0/digital innovation, and health IT business and product-growth strategies.

Francis has been a board director for a broad spectrum of organizations in the private and public sectors, and is an advisor to health IT and medical device incubators, such as those housed in the MaRS Discovery District and the Biomedical Zone. With her diverse, international experience in the public and private sectors, Francis brings a unique and comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing growing companies.

New Chair and members of Board of Governors announced

 Dr. John Semple, Chief of Surgery of Women’s College Hospital, has been elected Chair of the Board of Governors of OCAD University for a one-year term as of November 14. Dr. Semple has served as a member of the board since 2012 and is also an alumnus of the institution.

David P. Holland, was elected First Vice-Chair and Sharifa Khan, Second Vice-Chair. Both will serve one-year terms. In addition, four external members were elected to three-year terms: Dr. Claude Galipeau, Idris Mootee, Paul Rowan and Jaime Watt. These additions to the board follow Mark Robert’s appointment as an external member by the Government of Ontario this past September.

“I am honoured to have been elected Chair and look forward to welcoming the new members of the board who bring such varied experiences and perspectives to our university,” said Dr. Semple.

“The new members of the board bring a wide range of skills and deep knowledge of realms including digital media, strategic foresight, venture investment, health care, industrial design, social justice and human rights,” said Dr. Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor, OCAD University. “They will add to our momentum, providing guidance to the university as it continues to grow and evolve.”

Background:

Dr. John Semple: Chief of Surgery at Women’s College Hospital
Dr. Semple is a professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. In March 2010, he was named Chair in Surgical Breast Cancer Research by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Ontario Region.

David P. Holland: President and Chief Executive Officer, Torstar Corporation
Holland began his career at Torstar’s corporate office and has since had senior leadership positions within all divisions of the company. Torstar Corporation is a media company whose businesses include the Toronto Star, Toronto.com, Workopolis, Olive Media and eyeReturn, as well as a majority interest in the Metro chain of free daily newspapers and the Chinese-language paper Sing Tao Daily.

Sharifa Khan: President and CEO, Balmoral Marketing Inc.

At Balmoral Marketing, Khan leads a team of seasoned multicultural specialists to service corporate, government and non-profit organizations, guiding them to connect with diverse audiences in Canada. She is a tireless entrepreneur and sits on many boards, including those of Mount Sinai Hospital and the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto.

Dr. Claude Galipeau: Country Manager, Yahoo! Canada
Dr. Galipeau has held senior positions within many of the giants of Canadian broadcasting, from Alliance Atlantis to the CBC. His board experience includes the Banff Television Festival Foundation, which hosts the Banff World Television Festival, and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) of Canada.

Idris Mootee: Chief Executive Officer, Idea Couture
With more than 25 years of strategic management experience, Mootee has acquired extensive expertise in developing growth strategy and driving transformation. Described as the "the ultimate foresight machine" and "strategic innovation guru," he is an incredibly sought-after board advisor.

Mark Robert: Co-Founder and Managing Partner, The Carlu Corporation Ltd.
Prior to restoring the historic Carlu events venue, Robert was Chief Operating Officer at The Art Vault Limited, a publicly traded global e-commerce internet art site. He was Co-Chair of the Art with Heart fundraiser for Casey House for three years and has been involved with the Board of Heritage Toronto, among other cultural organizations.

Paul Rowan: Co-founder and Vice-President, Inspiration, Umbra
For more than 30 years, Rowan has dedicated his career to creating purposeful, intelligently designed products that answer people’s utilitarian needs and aesthetic wants. In 2001 Rowan was granted the Premier’s Award for Outstanding Achievement from the Colleges of Ontario.

Jaime Watt: Executive Chairman, Navigator Ltd.
Deeply involved with equality and human rights issues, Watt has received numerous awards for his service to the community, including Out on Bay Street’s Leader to be Proud of Award. He is a sought-after public affairs commentator who specializes in public strategy issues.
