GradEx 102 creative revealed

Congratulations to Dalbert B. Vilarino!

OCAD University congratulates fourth-year Illustration student Dalbert B. Vilarino, whose creative concept was selected to represent GradEx 102 this year. The selection process involved a multi-stage process of financial compensation for the selection and development of work.  An open call was posted to all OCAD U students in October 2016, inviting them to submit a creative proposal and samples of existing work. The process included a jury made up of faculty, staff, students and external industry experts which was further refined to take into account feedback. Final jury members were selected based on their understanding of issues of diversity, race, oppression and inclusion.

The concept playfully captures the collaborative energy of both OCAD U’s diverse students and their creative practices. “The central action of the image is four people creating and collaborating on work that is highly creative and forward-thinking, as representative of the best aspects of OCAD U's student body,” says Vilarino. “Further, all of the activity is placed inside a large, surreal room, which has fragmented and disrupted planes to suggest the ability of the students to overcome the restraints of reality in producing the very best work in their respective fields."

More than 900 OCAD U artists and designers from the Class of 2017 will be exhibiting at the biggest GradEx ever – OCAD U’s 102nd from May 3 to May 7.

On behalf of the GradEx jury, OCAD University thanks all the students who submitted their concepts for consideration.

Students can learn more about the creative process at a discussion on March 6. Students can ask questions or provide feedback about  the process to determine this year's GradEx creative and meet the creative jury leadership.
