OCAD U Alumni Holiday Social Reception & Presentation: “100 Years of Title Design in Film, TV, and Beyond”
Monday, December 12, 2016 - 11:00pm to Tuesday, December 13, 2016 - 1:00am

Can you imagine James Bond without that iconic opening gun barrel shot? Or Star Wars without the opening crawl?

Mix and mingle in the Bell Blue Lounge with fellow OCAD U alumni, enjoy hors d’oeuvres, refreshments and holiday cheer. Then take in a stunning look at 100 years of title design, an art form at the nexus of filmmaking, graphic design, and marketing.

In this engaging presentation, commissioned exclusively for our Holiday Social, Lola Landekic and Will Perkins of Art of the Title will explore the vast, beautiful, and under-appreciated field of title design – from its origins at the beginning of the film industry, through its golden ages and renaissances, into the explosion of television, and its recent spread into video games and beyond.

Ticket includes private catered reception in the Bell Blue Room followed by a presentation in Cinema 4 exclusive to our guests.

MAAD alumnae deck the InterContinental halls

Adelle Dubblestyne and Liane Vaz

Christmas tree decoration
Friday, December 4, 2015 - 9:30pm

On December 3, the InterContinental Toronto Centre hotel presented its first annual Festive Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration. At the centre of the festivities was a 12-foot tall tree decorated by Material Art & Design alumnae Liane Vaz (BDes, Jewellery, 2013) and Adelle Dubblestyne (BDes, Jewellery, 2013).

With the support of OCAD University’s Career Development office and Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers, Vaz and Dubblestyne prepared portfolios for submission to the hotel’s public relations team, which then chose the duo as their tree designers. On November 26, Vaz and Dubblestyne met with InterContiental staff to pitch four different themes based on the hotel’s desire for a “classic and elegant” design approach that used red, gold and silver. “We brought those colours in different shades, such as deeper reds and paler golds,” Vaz explains, “and we introduced texture by using fabrics and unusual shapes. Being jewellers, we are very detail-oriented, and working on a project this size meant we had to create large, dramatic pieces, but we also wanted to add little details other designers may not have thought of.”

With just five days to source and make all the decorations, Vaz and Dubblestyne had to scramble to get the project completed on time. “We actually worked through the night,” Vaz explains, “from 9 p.m. on December 2 until 6:30 a.m. on December 3. Like elves!”

OCAD U participates in Union Station Holiday Market

Photo of Union Station Marketplace exhibition
Monday, December 1, 2014 - 6:00pm

The Center for Emerging Artists and Designers, working with the Photo and Publications programs, has created a retail shop and juried exhibition at the Union Station Holiday Marketplace. The temporary market on the first floor of the station runs through Sunday December 7 and features the work of 65 Toronto entrepreneurs.

“This is an outstanding venue for student talent from the Faculty of Art to showcase their work and participate in entrepreneurial opportunities, in a format that allows for many forms of exchange with the public. We’re thrilled for the partnership.” - Zev Farber, Manager, Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers.

The Toronto Star calls the Holiday Marketplace “a pop-up holiday shop with a twist.” It features small, local and online businesses in a busy location, making it easy for commuters to pick up unique and affordable gifts on the go.

The Union Station Holiday Market project leadership worked with Derek Liddington, Coordinator, Career Development, and faculty members Jennifer Long and Shannon Gerard through November to produce the exhibition and retail opportunity.

For hours and details visit the Union Station Website.
