The award provides an envelope of $15,000 in support of faculty members to
develop innovative approaches to Indigenous curriculum in Graduate Studies.
Proposals are invited from faculty who are interested in developing new graduate
programs, enhancing existing programs, or any other pedagogical approaches that
engage Indigenous curriculum, practices, or ways of learning at the graduate level.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this opportunity is to provide support for faculty members
at OCAD U to develop innovative approaches to Indigenous learning and pedagogy that
will address the following principles:
1. provide a stimulating graduate environment that will enhance student and faculty
participation in Indigenous learning
2. engage and promote Indigenous methodologies and ways of knowing in an ethical
framework
3. encourage participation from Indigenous faculty and students
4. provide a structure which foregrounds Indigenous teaching methods and learning
5. encourage creativity in the fields of Indigenous art and design
6. achieve national recognition as an exceptional graduate learning environment
AWARD: Up to $15,000 for the one-year duration of the award. Innovation projects
may require significant development and consultation elements, so team and group
proposals are welcomed. The principal applicant must be OCAD U faculty but team
members may be external to the university. The envelope is limited to a total of $15,000,
but there is no individual limit to the award, and we anticipate supporting from one to
three awards.
TERM: Sept 1, 2018 through May 31, 2019.

PROCESS: Proposals are invited from faculty at OCAD U who are interested in
advancing Indigenous practices in graduate teaching, learning, and pedagogy. Proposals
may involve the development of innovative course deliveries or learning models or
entirely new graduate programs and the potential to increase awareness and capacity of
Indigenous practices at the graduate level. Proposals that demonstrate a model that will
attract the enrolment of Indigenous students and engagement by Indigenous faculty are
particularly welcomed. Priority will be given to projects that may not be easily
accommodated through normal curriculum development processes. Queries regarding

Proposals should be between 1000-1200 words in length, not including supporting
documentation. Letters of support from a Graduate Program Director, Undergraduate
Chair, or Dean may accompany the application should there be need to detail any
management plan for course release or additional support provided by the unit. Examples
of eligible innovation activities could include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Developing a new graduate level program
• Enhancing existing graduate programs to engage Indigenous practices
• Proposing curricular or pedagogical shifts that address Indigeneity
• Other innovations that involve Graduate Studies and Indigenous knowledges
CRITERIA: Proposals must:
• outline in detail what the objectives are and how the work will be accomplished
• address relationship to the OCAD U Academic Plan and its Indigenous priority
• show benefits to students (ongoing and prospective), faculty, and/or the
university, and accountability to community
• establish a budget and timeline for implementation
• include an evaluation/assessment plan
• include an updated CV of the principal applicant
The office of Graduate Studies will strike an ad hoc committee including Indigenous
faculty and make recommendations to the Dean of Grad Studies.
The results will be announced by August 24, 2018.
