Public Presentation: Patty Johnson,Tenure Track Candidate, Faculty of Design

Patty Johnson has 16 years of professional experience as a designer, curator, lecturer and teacher. Patty is currently working on two research projects that has relevance to OCAD. The first is a research initiative with the Rotman School of Management, the Designworks Centre and the North–South Project. The Second is the creation of a new design program for the interior space of the Ontario Centres of Excellence’s Office in Toronto that will be rolled out in all offices across Ontario. Since 1998, Patty has taught at a variety of institutions including Sheridan Institute, School of Animation, Art and Design, the Royal Ontario Museum, and OCAD.

Public Presentation: Jules Goss,Tenure Track Candidate, Faculty of Design

For the past 7 years Jules Goss has worked in the ID program in OCAD first as a sessional faculty member and currently as an assistant professor. Jules has participated in the many and profound changes in all aspects of the school over this time, from physical growth (Sharp Centre) to transitioning to a university, to engaging in new opportunities in research, cross disciplinary practice and redefinition and development of learning and design education. Jules professional practice has evolved during his time here at OCAD. He transitioned from being a furniture and product designer to running a small consultancy where he facilitates the integration of design process and practice into corporate and not-for-profit organizations. Jules clients include Bell Canada, Ontario Service Safety Alliance, Workers Safety and Insurance Board and the Covenant Group.

Public Presentation: Joe Morse, Candidate for Tenure Track position, Illustration

Joe Morse has been a professional illustrator for 23 years and has won over 150 international awards. Joe has taught Life Drawing, Basic Design, Object Drawing, Painting and Editorial Illustration. Joe has lectured on his work at OCAD in Toronto, Peen State at Erie, NY, the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas and that the Hallo Academy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Leading a faculty of 30, teaching, academic advising over 320 students and running a vibrant business have honed Joe’s skills in leadership, team building and goal setting.

Public Presentation: Jayson Zaleski, Candidate for Tenure Track position, Graphic Design

Jayson Zaleski is a senior-level designer and brings 9 years of Toronto-based professional studio experience of high-calibre design to the position. Jayson continues to maintain his own design practice. He has 3 years of sessional teaching appointments from OCAD at the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year levels. Jayson has also lectured at both OCAD and Ryerson, both in the capacity of guest speakers. He has also been involved with redesigning the 3rd year Visual Communications final exhibit course at Medicine Hat College where he is currently teaching Graphic Design & typography in a full time capacity.

Public Presentation: Gail Geltner,Tenure Track Candidate, Faculty of Design

Gail Geltner’s career as an artist-illustrator spans 3 decades. She has produced drawings, paintings, graphic design, for newspapers, magazines, theatre companies, exhibitions, and social agencies both in Canada, and the US. Gail’s work has been commissioned by Oxford University press: McCelland & Steward, University of Toronto Press, Penguin, The Women’s Press, and numerous others. Gail’s 20 year photographic project entitled “the Other Family Album: A Chronicle 1975-1995”, was exhibited at the Cathedral of St. John the Devine in New York City, The Arts and Culture Centre in Corner Brook, NL and was shown at the Floating Gallery in Winnipeg and the Nurse-Healers Conference in Vancouver, BC. Gail is currently researching the connections between the Creative Arts and the Healing Arts. Gail’s introduction to Therapeutic Touch prompted her to study Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Eastern Medical Theory.

Over the past 8 years at the Ontario College of Art & Design, Doug Panton has taken a particular interest in supporting cross-disciplinary design skills. He has had a successful career as an illustrator and a designer for over thirty years. Doug continues to receive assignments that require the design complexity of a multi-faceted project outcome, this has enabled him to experience and expand his competency in this area. With this industry experience it has allowed him to apply a methodology that further develops an interdisciplinary nature—where designers use illustration techniques and vice versa but most important an understanding of both disciplines.

OCAD Abroad: Sharing Insights from International Experiences

In January, Judith Doyle was a Visiting Lecturer at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA - Digital Media Program) in Beijing, and at Tongji University’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning in Shanghai. Doyle delivered a Memorandum of Understanding co-signed by the presidents of OCAD and CAFA, opening doors for future academic cooperation. She will show pictures and share information about these schools.

In April, Jules Goss went to Japan and participated in discussions regarding institutional transition to university status, promoting research to faculty and how to facilitate design research at an undergraduate level. He will present photos and share insights emerging from his discussions.
