OCAD U meets with prospective students and their families at OUF

Tuesday, September 23, 2014 - 4:00am

Over the weekend, OCAD University faculty, staff, alumni and students were on hand to meet with more than 129,000 prospective students and their families at the Ontario Universities’ Fair, Canada’s largest post-secondary education fair, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Attendance at this year’s fair was up by more than 7% over last year.

During the three day event, prospective students had a chance to ask questions about OCAD U’s programs, career opportunities and life on campus. Information sessions were presented four times a day showcasing specific programs and highlights of studying at OCAD U. The event gives the university an opportunity to share our stories and successes with students, parents and teachers from across the province, and invites them to our many other events such as Look Inside (October 25), National Portfolio Day (November 8) and our Portfolio Clinics (Saturdays and Sundays, November through February).

OCAD University’s Admissions & Recruitment team extends a heartfelt thanks to all those who helped make the weekend such a success:

  • Our students: Karella  Raffinan, Nicole Rebello, Zviko Mhakayakora, Jeremy Nir and Daniel Jones;
  • Our alumni: Cecilia Leddy, Sylvia Pinsonneault, Alex Thompson, Arielle Gavin, Tim Manalo, Katie McGuire, Lauren Vaile, Layne Hinton and Lucero Milchorena;
  • Our faculty, Deans and President: Sara Diamond, Spencer Harrison, JJ Lee, Dot Tuer, Caroline Langill, Gayle Nicoll and Colette Laliberté;
  • Staff from all corners of campus: Meghan O'Neill, Sayeda Akbary, Beth Kotierk, Jeff Zoeler, Kanyika Yorke, Lola Landekic, Sarah Mulholland, Kelly Faller, Andre De Freitas, Diana Bahr, Zach Moss, Deanne Fisher and Elisabeth Paradis.

At OCAD University, you’ll work hard because you’ll want to. Because you will be inspired. Because you can’t imagine being anywhere else.

OCAD U alumni, medal winners, faculty and staff want students to know more about what makes this university unique and what it takes to study here. This year’s OCAD U booth at the Ontario Universities Fair (OUF), held September 27 to September 29 at Toronto’s Metro Convention Centre, was bigger and more active than ever.

OUF, North America’s largest education fair, brings together representatives from all 21 Ontario universities. Last year it was attended by more than 115,000 students, parents and educators from across the province and beyond. This year there were 121,000 attendees, and Saturday was the second largest attendance days in the history of the event, with more than 52,000 people going through.

“It’s an opportunity for students to learn more about all of the universities in Ontario at one place and at one time. There’s no other event like it,” says Jan Sage, OCAD U’s Director, Admissions & Recruitment. “Our focus is to answer questions and let students know OCAD U is an art and design university with the same academic rigour as other universities. It’s an option for students who want to study art and design at a university level.”

Sage says the fair is primarily for highschool students investigating their options for post-secondary education. It’s an important place to learn about universities they may wish to attend and what the admission requirements are. “When choosing courses, it’s really important to have an idea of where you want to end up,” Sage says. “For university you need a combination of U or M designated classes.”

Doors open at 11:45 a.m.
Reviews take place from 12 to 4 p.m.

The line-ups can be very long -- arrive early!

An education in art and design is a special learning experience. National Portfolio Day is your opportunity to meet professionals from some of the finest design and visual arts schools in North America. It’s not a competition, and no offers of admission will be made. Bring your portfolio, of your best and most recent work, and have it critiqued by the school of your choice.

About the day

At our National Portfolio Day event reviews are held from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and take place on a first-come, first served basis. No reservations or advanced registration is required. We recommend that participants arrive prior to the event to secure a spot in line. You will be waiting outside prior to the event so we suggest that you protect your work, bring an umbrella and a snack. Once you are inside, you will be given a map and you can join the line for the school you want to meet with.

What should you bring?

Include a variety of finished pieces in your portfolio that demonstrate your ability to work with a wide range of techniques, materials and subject matter. Drawings may be from direct observation as well as from your imagination and memory. New media or time based work can be included. Work exploring colour, form, mixed media, and 3D approaches are welcome. In addition to finished pieces, your portfolio may include works in progress. Include a sketchbook/creative journal to demonstrate your creative process and work habits. Do not mat or frame your work, or worry about the presentation. The work itself is what is of interest.

OCAD University invites prospective students to Look Inside

Wednesday, October 6, 2010 - 4:00am

(Toronto — October 6, 2010) OCAD University (OCADU) will open its doors to prospective students and their families on Saturday, October 23 from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. during its 6th annual fall open house, Look Inside.

“Look Inside is a chance for anyone considering a post-secondary career in visual communication to imagine themselves as a part of the OCAD University community,” said Jan Sage, Director of Admissions & Recruitment at OCAD University.

Current students, faculty and staff will be on hand to guide visitors through OCAD University’s facilities. Visitors can explore drawing and painting, printmaking and photography studios, fabrication studios where students work in wood, plastics, metals, see demonstrations in fibre, jewellery, ceramics, and talk to students and faculty about life at OCADU.

Summer Intensive Program

Monday, July 22, 2013 - 1:00pm to Friday, July 26, 2013 - 9:00pm

Success in art and design is about passion, exploration and the development of a strong conceptual voice. Novice artists and designers often confuse the medium with the methodology and become focused on the outcome rather than the process involved in creating work. The Summer Intensive Program will help you see the differences.

Inquire early as space is limited, registration required in advance.
