What does it mean to be Canadian? What memories serve in building a narrative as a Canadian? What new knowledges are changing that perception? How can we express views without harming others, but succeed in opening doors to new conversations? How can we leave the past and enter a future where colonialism is only part of our collective history, not our present and not our future? Where do we begin?

2016 Sculpture/Installation Thesis Exhibitions' Series: Half a Grapefruit is a Full Circle

installation artwork including pvc pipe and styrofoam sheets
installation artwork including crumpled sheet of pink plastic
Wednesday, March 16, 2016 - 4:00am to Friday, March 25, 2016 - 4:00am

As part of the OCADU Sculpture and Installation program, Michelle Foran will be putting on her first solo exhibition at Birch Contemporary.

Opening reception: Thursday, March 17 - 6 to 8pm

Artist Statement:  Order, like all things, has an anti, which is the dismantling of itself through entropy, like shortcuts, desire lines and IKEA hacking. Using found materials such as industrial piping, plaster and plastics my work draws connections between the abstract and the factual. These seemingly mundane materials adopt new dispositions through a re-contextualization in the attempt at reversing the role of entropy. The separate pieces in this installation merge together to appear illogical but through their illogical representation become systematic. Half a Grapefruit is a Full Circle transforms found objects using vibrant colour and choreography that results in their new and heightened presence.

2016 Sculpture/Installation Thesis Exhibitions' Series: Current

photo of a woman involved in artwork
Thursday, March 3, 2016 - 5:00am to Saturday, March 19, 2016 - 4:00am

Current: Kristina Guison

March 3 - March 19, 2016:

Wed to Sat, 12 pm to 5 pm

Opening: Friday, March 4, 7 – 9 pm

Current: a static moment of “now” and a fleeting state of constant “motion”. Two seemingly paradoxical definitions, specific to the context where they are applied. Current refers to the flow of fluid entities: water, air and electricity between multiple points in space with a significant degree of distance apart from each other. Distance between time and space, past memories and present moments, compress and contract in response not just to an individual’s immediate environment but also to the peripheral environments.

Globalization as it exists in the 21st century, emerges from a network of interactions between multiple geographical spaces and time periods. Current is an investigation of the socio-political relationships that engender technological inventions we utilize to perceive, extend and limit human experiences.
