OCAD UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DESIGN WALLWORK FOR MERCEDES BENZ FINANCIAL SERVICES

Evelyn Quach & Karen J. Li, Ignite, winning proposal for Wallwork design for the Mercedes-Benz Financial Services
Thursday, April 26, 2018 - 11:15am

For the second year in a row, OCAD University students enrolled in the course Painting in the Expanded Field were given a unique opportunity to develop a Wallwork design for the Mercedes-Benz Financial Services (MBFS) Mississauga-based office.

Students were invited to propose an installation for the wall space outside the Human Resources offices at MBFS. While considering the particulars of the site, including the physical and social qualities of the office space, they were also asked to consider the cultural and social nature of the space and the surrounding area.

On April 16, 2018, the six shortlisted students presented their proposals to MBFS Mississauga Employees. Through a voting system the MBFS community selected Ignite a collaborative piece by Evelyn Quach & Karen J. Li, from 13 entries. Evelyn and Karen describe their project as “an installation that examines forms of engine parts from both past and present of Mercedes Benz.” Each of the engine shapes made of Masonite boards will be backlit with LED lights that can be remotely controlled to change colours.

They will be installing their piece the weekend of May 26-27, 2018 and it will be up for a year.

The runner-up went to Jonathan Fong, with his proposed work titled Faces “A wall work installation that highlights the community at the MBFS office having painted portraits of their employees on various sized sheets of plexiglass juxtaposed along the wall of the HR department.”

A true advocate of the arts, the generosity of Mercedes-Benz Financial Services has benefited our current students and helped shape the success of our graduates.
