OCAD University Photography students are papering the town with their art this spring.

Twenty-seven graduates of OCAD U’s Photography program (thesis option) will showcase their images in this year’s centennial Graduate Exhibition as well as the prestigious Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival.

The CONTACT show – The Fortune of Having Been There – will be divided into three “volumes.” Each will be curated by a third-year student from OCAD U’s Criticism and Curatorial Practices program:

  • Volume I: May 14 to 24 (Opening reception: May 15)
  • Volume II: May 25 to June 2 (Opening reception: May 28)
  • Volume III: June 3 to 10 (Opening reception: June 5)

The volumes will unfold at The Project Gallery (1109 Queen St. E.), and the curators will attend their respective opening receptions.

Before that month-long exhibition gets underway, those 27 visionary photographers will present their work at OCAD U’s Graduate Exhibition – the biggest in the university’s history. The hundredth anniversary of this annual gathering of graduating students’ art, design and digital-media projects is open to the public from 6:30 p.m. on April 29 until 5 p.m. on May 3.

Four of the 27 also have works included in another CONTACT show: Revolution. All the participants in Revolution are students in OCAD U’s International Collaboration Studio course. Visit the exhibition at the Open Gallery, 49 McCaul St., from May 10 to 25.

There is No Map: Virtual Walks in a Vanishing Landscape

Image of a map
Wednesday, April 15, 2015 - 5:00pm to Wednesday, April 22, 2015 - 11:00pm

Please join us for IAMD student Linda Elshami's MFA thesis exhibition, There is No Map: Virtual Walks in a Vanishing Landscape. The exhibition runs from April 15 to 22, 1 to 7 p.m. daily, with an opening reception on April 17 starting at 6 p.m.

There Is No Map is a body of work that contributes to an ongoing investigation of the Israeli occupation in the West Bank. The work is manifested in optic and haptic modes of representation; it embodies a geopolitical struggle using critical and methodological graphic design praxis and an interdisciplinary approach that integrates cartography and architecture.

The production of occupation hinges on the Israeli spatial practices that continuously shift, construct, deconstruct, segregate, and shuffle the landscape of the West Bank. These practices are present in the continuous building of settlements, gates, checkpoints, and separation barriers; pouring concrete becomes an act of casting political ideologies and a condition for the expansion of Israel. The exhibition examines these spatial practices close up and at a distance. As such, the work examines the geography/landscape of the West Bank as a (site) through performing virtual tours (sight) using Google Earth to render a landscape in transition.

The Fortune of Having Been There

Contact logo with OCAD U loco
Thursday, May 14, 2015 - 4:00am to Wednesday, June 10, 2015 - 4:00am

27 emerging artists from OCAD University’s photography thesis program present their graduate work in the exhibition, The Fortune of Having Been There, as part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival

The Fortune of Having Been There showcases the work of 27 graduates of OCAD’s photography thesis program. This month long exhibition, curated into three distinct shows by students from OCAD’s Criticism and Curatorial Practices program, introduces the next generation of local artists and curators.

Volume I (May 14 to 24), curated by Tori Maas. This exhibition brings together images and objects from artists’ interactions with space and site, the landscapes they inhabit, and the tension created by the collision of public and private lives. Opening: Friday May 15, 5 to 8 p.m.

Volume II (May 25 to June 2), curated by Sara Nicole England. The gateway into this exhibition is the idea of "doubling." Included works incorporate subject matter that mirrors the "double nature" of photography; twinning, duplication, generation, imagined selves and masquerade are all at play. Opening: Thursday May 28, 5 to 8 p.m.

Volume III (June 3 to 10), curated by Stephanie Peikert. As humans, we often associate ourselves with external entities in order to ground us in our journey. Exploring the relationship between individuals and objects, works in this exhibit reveal the associations, tensions and struggles inherent to identity and self-discovery. Opening: Friday June 5, 5 to 8 p.m.

These events are open to the public and press. The artists and curator of each volume will be in attendance during the respective opening reception.

Gallery Hours: Tuesday to Friday: 2 pm to 8 pm. Saturday to Sunday: 12 pm to 6 pm
