For second-year OCAD U Illustration major, Mathieu Larone, it was a dream come true. Larone’s illustration was featured this week in The New York Times ̶ The Importance of Dumb Mistakes in College.
“I connected with the art director through sheer luck and through a couple of well-timed emails,” said Larone. He also took advantage of some great tips from alumni and friends and ran with them.
Originally from Montréal, Larone says he grew up on Tintin and Garfield comics. He moved to Toronto because he felt like “it was the place to be for Canadian illustration.” He has worked with La maison de la bande dessinée de Montréal which inspired him with direction and drive. He now looks forward to learning as much as possible while in Toronto and at OCAD U.
“OCAD U does a particularly good job preparing students for the profession with its real-world curriculum, including Professional Practice and portfolio-building (Media Studio: Social) courses, and with faculty whose active careers and contacts serve as indispensable resources,“ said Paul Dallas, Chair, Illustration, Faculty of Design, OCAD University. “But when all is said and done, once your work reaches an art director, it’s your talent, originality and problem-solving ability that will determine if you get commissioned.”
