Statement from OCAD University on Canada's Budget 2018

Wednesday, February 28, 2018 - 12:45pm

OCAD University welcomes the historic investments in science and research in yesterday’s federal budget. The government has recognized important investment needs outlined by Canada’s Fundamental Science Review to advance the production of public knowledge and research. Also commendable — and key to an inclusive and prosperous Canada — is the budget’s focus on gender equity, Indigenous investment and supports to culture.

That Budget 2018 has adopted a lens of diversity and equity will help to make the innovation it champions inclusive. The significance of this cannot be understated. The complex problems of the 21st century require intensive interdisciplinary approaches and human-centered knowledge.

OCAD University is a leader in decolonization, diversity and equity; the university’s Academic Plan has decolonization as core to academic mandate and mission. Our institution leads in defining research in art and design practice, scholarship, and teaching and learning, as reflected in the myriad disciplines that comprise our academic community. Over the past decade, we have built on the history of studio art and design to establish significant leadership in art and design related scholarship, as well as research-creation, as recognized sources of knowledge production. Our research activities demonstrate how inclusively designed research makes new knowledge accessible to diverse stakeholders and communities.

Budget 2018 supports interdisciplinary and international collaborative research as essential  — not only for uncovering new areas of knowledge, but also for realizing the value of ideas as they are translated into application, products, services and other innovation. This underscores the importance of design disciplines especially as crucial to Canada’s innovation-carrying capacity.

From Dr. Sara Diamond, OCAD University President:

“Budget 2018’s focus on interdisciplinary discovery and partnerships is wonderful news for OCAD U, as it is for all science, research and innovation communities in Canada. Seeing women entrepreneurs and diversity factor across the research and entrepreneurship continuum will move us closer to the goal of full-spectrum innovation. Most importantly, this budget signals recognition by the Government of Canada that research, equity and Indigenous reconciliation are vital ingredients in our country’s long-term wealth and prosperity.”
