"Two Leaning Towers" 2019 International Poster Exhibition

Congratulations to Instructor Anson Liaw (Graphic Design Program at OCAD U) for being invited as 1 of only 100 Graphic Designers to create a poster commemorating 49 years of diplomatic relations between China and Italy 

and celebrating the two leaning towers: Tiger Hill Pagoda in Suzhou China, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in the Province of Pisa is located in the beautiful region of Tuscany in Italy.

The Tiger Hill Pagoda is a dazzling gem of the traditional Chinese art, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy is a wonder of the world's cultural heritage. Both of them are unique representatives of the Eastern and Western cultures. In 2019, in coincidence with the 49th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy, in order to ignite different coloured sparks between the Eastern and Western cultures, the Suzhou Tiger Hill Management Office is hosting the International Invitational Poster Exhibition: Two Leaning Towers as a joint contribution to creating an urban culture between China and Italy.

Dr. Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor of OCAD University, received Toronto Digifest’s Digital Media Pioneer Award at a ceremony yesterday at Artscape Launchpad. Dr. Diamond is a new media pioneer, curator, researcher, lecturer and artistic director who has become synonymous with Canadian art, culture and media. She has played a significant role as a champion for interdisciplinary collaboration among artists and engineers and leading visionary programs including the Banff New Media Institute and in her role as the President of OCAD University.

A team made up of OCAD University and University of Toronto students won two awards at the 9th Annual Level Up Showcase, which took place at the Design Exchange. Their Fangs and Friends game received the Distinction in Art and the Best Overall Game awards. The group also came in second place in the People’s Choice Award category.

OCAD University’s alumna Jihee Min is the selected artist mentee for a Public Art Mentorship launched by The Sustainable Thinking and Expression on Public Space (STEPS) Initiative, a charitable organization that works with large scale public artworks, along with Brad Golden + Co.  There were more than 125 applicants from across the country.

OCAD University has developed a number of initiatives to support the programming of Toronto’s first international Biennial of Art. The 72-day, free art exhibition will take place every two years.Launching September 21, 2019, the inaugural exhibition, curated by Candice Hopkins and Tairone Bastien, will present local, national, and international contemporary art in a city-wide experience.

Once again, OCAD U’s Project 31 fundraising auction was a great success, raising much-needed funds for scholarships and bursaries for students in financial need and the purchase of specialized equipment. This year, Project 31 featured 39 works donated by 42 of OCAD U’s award-winning faculty members and alumni. This year’s auction raised $144,250 (gross) and since 2010, the event has raised more than $1 million (net).
