Wednesday, June 1, 2016 - 6:30pm
OCAD University returning as a major cultural partner of Pride Toronto, which this year is hosting Canada’s first ever Pride Month!
Cheryl Pope’s Objects for Listening
As part of this growing, inclusive arts and culture festival, OCAD U’s Onsite Gallery is presenting new work by renowned Chicago-based visual artist Cheryl Pope. This is Pope’s first time exhibiting in Canada.
Earlier this year, Pope collaborated with OCAD U students and local community members to create an exhibition that forms part of the university’s Pride 2016 programming. A site-specific exhibition, Objects for Listening comprises 10 colourful varsity-style champion banners, each of which is printed with a brief text developed in workshops where Pope engaged participants in conversations around issues of sexual orientation, identity and power.
Objects for Listening is curated by Lisa Deanne Smith, the curator of Onsite Gallery, and made possible by support from OCAD U’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Sustainability Initiatives, Onsite Gallery and Admissions & Recruitment.
OCAD U student show
For Pride 2016, OCAD U will concurrently host a student show and public art installation led by OCAD U’s chair of Media & Installation Art, Wrik Mead. The works aim to unite and empower students in their diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. Parts of this exhibition will move to the Pride Street Fair for Pride weekend (July 1–3).
When: June 8 to July 4, 2016
Where: The Great Hall, OCAD University, 100 McCaul St., Toronto
Opening reception: June 8, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. DJs Mary Mack and Cozmic Cat will spin tunes, and there will be a mini-ball and performance by House of Monroe.
Attendance at the exhibition and opening reception are free and everyone is welcome.
ASL provided for opening remarks and to interpret the works.
