Graduate Studies Indigenous Innovation Fund

Thursday, May 10, 2018 - 1:30pm

The award provides an envelope of $15,000 in support of faculty members to

develop innovative approaches to Indigenous curriculum in Graduate Studies.

Proposals are invited from faculty who are interested in developing new graduate

programs, enhancing existing programs, or any other pedagogical approaches that

engage Indigenous curriculum, practices, or ways of learning at the graduate level.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this opportunity is to provide support for faculty members

at OCAD U to develop innovative approaches to Indigenous learning and pedagogy that

will address the following principles:

1. provide a stimulating graduate environment that will enhance student and faculty

participation in Indigenous learning

2. engage and promote Indigenous methodologies and ways of knowing in an ethical

framework

3. encourage participation from Indigenous faculty and students

4. provide a structure which foregrounds Indigenous teaching methods and learning

5. encourage creativity in the fields of Indigenous art and design

6. achieve national recognition as an exceptional graduate learning environment

AWARD: Up to $15,000 for the one-year duration of the award. Innovation projects

may require significant development and consultation elements, so team and group

proposals are welcomed. The principal applicant must be OCAD U faculty but team

members may be external to the university. The envelope is limited to a total of $15,000,

but there is no individual limit to the award, and we anticipate supporting from one to

three awards.

TERM: Sept 1, 2018 through May 31, 2019.

Application Deadline: Friday, Aug 3, 2018 - 4 p.m. to the Dean's Office, Graduate

Studies, 501-205 Richmond Street or gradstudies@ocadu.ca

PROCESS: Proposals are invited from faculty at OCAD U who are interested in

advancing Indigenous practices in graduate teaching, learning, and pedagogy. Proposals

may involve the development of innovative course deliveries or learning models or

entirely new graduate programs and the potential to increase awareness and capacity of

Indigenous practices at the graduate level. Proposals that demonstrate a model that will

attract the enrolment of Indigenous students and engagement by Indigenous faculty are

particularly welcomed. Priority will be given to projects that may not be easily

accommodated through normal curriculum development processes. Queries regarding

eligibilty or process may be directed to gradstudies@ocadu.ca

Proposals should be between 1000-1200 words in length, not including supporting

documentation. Letters of support from a Graduate Program Director, Undergraduate

Chair, or Dean may accompany the application should there be need to detail any

management plan for course release or additional support provided by the unit. Examples

of eligible innovation activities could include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Developing a new graduate level program

• Enhancing existing graduate programs to engage Indigenous practices

• Proposing curricular or pedagogical shifts that address Indigeneity

• Other innovations that involve Graduate Studies and Indigenous knowledges

CRITERIA: Proposals must:

• outline in detail what the objectives are and how the work will be accomplished

• address relationship to the OCAD U Academic Plan and its Indigenous priority

• show benefits to students (ongoing and prospective), faculty, and/or the

university, and accountability to community

• establish a budget and timeline for implementation

• include an evaluation/assessment plan

• include an updated CV of the principal applicant

The office of Graduate Studies will strike an ad hoc committee including Indigenous
