An elementary school in Stouffville will be named after Canadian author and illustrator Barbara Reid.

Part of the York Region District School Board, Barbara Reid Public School is scheduled to open September 2017.

Reid has written and illustrated several picture books for children. She’s received many awards including the Governor General’s Award for English-language children’s illustration. She also became a member of the Order of Canada in 2013.

“I want to thank everyone who provided their input,” said chair of the board and trustee for East Gwillimbury and Whitchurch-Stouffville Loralea Carruthers. “Naming a new school is an important responsibility and I am pleased that this new school has a name that will inspire learning and be a positive influence within the school.”

The school name was decided during the 2015-2016 year. Carruthers established an email address where students and members of the school community sent recommendations for a school name.

Written submissions by students in the holding school were also received. Barbara Reid was recommended by students and the trustee after input was received.

The new school will be located on 130 Hoover Park Dr.
