Did you Know?

In this section, we introduce you to the exciting people, programs and centres at OCAD U! This month, an interview with Adam Wiendels, Manager, Marketing.

1. What is your main area of expertise? (please choose one)

My job includes managing OCAD U’s marketing, paid advertising, public-facing social media and the OCADU.ca website. I’ve worked in marketing for about 14 years and before that, I was in journalism.

2. Why is your department important to OCAD U?

Onsite Gallery – T.M. Glass: The Audible Language of Flowers

Mark your calendars for May 8 to attend the opening of T.M. Glass: The Audible Language of Flowers at Onsite Gallery (199 Richmond St. W.). Curated by Francisco Alvarez, Dorene & Peter Milligan Executive Director, OCAD U Galleries, the exhibition runs from May 8 to August 18, 2019.

MAAD Speakers Series: Heather Goodchild

The Material Art & Design (MAAD) Speakers Series Committee is hosting artist Heather Goodchild for a free talk, open to the public, on Thursday, March 21 (100 McCaul St., Rm. 230) from 1 to 2 p.m. Goodchild has exhibited since 2002 across Canada and abroad. She received the Chalmers Arts Fellowship in 2019 through the Ontario Arts Council and recently returned from a ceramics residency at the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts (Skopelos, Greece).

OCAD U to participate in CRAM

On April 5, OCAD U will participate in CRAM – a new, free learning festival designed to promote the transformative thinking of Toronto’s universities (OCAD University, University of Toronto, Ryerson University and York University). The universities will open their doors to give curious minds a chance to discover the unexpected ideas revolutionizing the way we think, live and work.

Coming soon – Project 31!

This year’s signature fundraising event, Project 31, takes place on Thursday, March 28, 6 p.m. at 100 McCaul St. (Great Hall, Level 2). The auction features 39 works of art, generously donated by OCAD U’s talented faculty members and alumni. Since 2010, Project 31 has raised more than $1 million (net) for the university.

Creative City Campus Update

The next phase of the Creative City Campus (CCC) construction project will start in April, beginning with the renovations of more than 30,000 square feet of Fabrication and Drawing & Painting studios at 100 McCaul St. This is a significant step in the project to transform OCAD U’s studio-based learning environment.

Making OCAD You!

A group of 25 staff and faculty participated in Making OCAD You, a collaborative design experience that challenged participants to consider what it means for OCAD U to be the best place to work. Hosted by Human Resources and facilitated by OCAD U Co, participants completed five full-day design thinking workshops and were tasked with suggesting feasible, desirable and creative ways to improve the work environment and experience for us all.

President’s message

We are in the midst of the coldest (and thankfully shortest) month of the year, but the daylight hours are getting longer, which somehow lifts the spirits. For the first time in six years, we had to close the university three times due to winter storms. Thanks to the Inclement Weather Team for letting us know in a thorough and timely manner. The safety of our community is essential to OCAD U; we don’t take this kind of action lightly.

Unfortunately, because of the severe weather closure we had to postpone the President’s Speaker Series talk featuring graphic design legend, recent Order of Canada recipient and former OCAD U professor Burton Kramer, in conversation with filmmaker Greg Durrell. We hope to bring them back later this spring.
