Keywords:
intimacy: for the show we are primarily considered with three different kinds of intimacy; with others (romantic, familial, friendly), with ourselves (leading back to ego, self, persona, identity), and with materiality (with digital devices & spaces, art & art practices/endeavours). All three forms come back to desire -- what leads us to seek out intimacy: in the context of our interests how/where do we seek digital intimacy?

refraction: the fact or phenomenon of light, radio waves, etc. being deflected in passing obliquely through the interface between one medium and another or through a medium of varying density.

disconnection & reconnection: the internet can lead us to connections that otherwise may not have been possible. It can create disconnections with our physical surroundings, body (persona) and technical disconnections like lost internet connections, broken phones, computers, and whatever else can go wrong with technology! Does technology create a digital extension of the self?

About:
feelSpace is made up of 13 OCAD University MFA candidates. We come from a variety of educational, professional, and artistic backgrounds, making interdisciplinary practices integral to our collaborative practice.

Inclusive Design & Digital Futures Grad Students win Pueblo Science Hackathon

Hackathon for Science Education
Tuesday, September 24, 2019 - 3:45pm

The challenge for the ‘Hackathon for Science Education’ run by Pueblo Science was to create a robotics-based science activity kit for high school students in Guyana. Here is the link for more information regarding the event: https://puebloscience.org/hackathon/

"The event brought together 50 innovative students with scientists, engineers and educators as mentors. The students and mentors worked to create kits that will teach aspects of robotics to high school students in low-resource communities around the world. The projects were presented in front of an expert judging panel on Sunday, September 22nd, 2019."

Grad Students Yasaman Rohanifar (Masters in Computer Science (UofT), Omid Ettehadi (Masters in Digital Futures (OCAD), Nahin Shah (Masters in Inclusive Design(OCAD), and Erman Akyol (Masters in Inclusive Design (OCAD), designed a 3-day curriculum for the teachers in Guyana. The first session will teach the students the basic concepts of programming (flowcharts and algorithms, loops, and if statements), for the second day, tasks will be given to assemble the robot (by providing a pre-made PCB), and experiment with some pre-written functions in the Arduino IDE with the option to write codes themselves; program the micro-processor and see what their program does with the robot.

Curator's Talk with CCP students, Courtney Miller & Valérie Frappier

Curators' Talk:

Undercurrents | A billboard exhibition featuring Susan Blight, Erika DeFreitas, Melissa General and Jessica Karuhanga

Undercurrents is a billboard exhibition created for The Bentway’s Community Incubation Program as part of the 2019 Fall Season, titled Second Nature. Looking to the influence from nearby Niigaani-gichigami/Lake Ontario as a lifebody, Undercurrents asks: what memories does this land and water hold? Whose histories are well documented, and whose are submerged?

Featuring a series of three double-sided billboards, the exhibition presents the work of four artists based in the Greater Toronto Area: Susan Blight, Erika DeFreitas, Melissa General and Jessica Karuhanga. Situating their physical bodies and cultural narratives in relation to water around Tkarón:to/Toronto, the artists re-assert ancestral histories, examine current contexts, and imagine future relations with water. Each billboard can be interpreted as simultaneous moments in time: the past, the present, and the future; demonstrating that histories continually resurface. Looking to the moon, the muse to water’s rhythms, time can be thought as a cycle—emerging and re-emerging, telling and re-telling—rather than points in a linear narrative.

Niigaani-gichigami/Lake Ontario is a confluence of rivers—a meeting place for Indigenous societies for over 11,000 years. While settler histories of the lake and surrounding area are widely known, Indigenous and Black histories in relation to this body of water have been submerged. Many Torontonians are disconnected with the lake’s various histories, and Undercurrents aims to revive their importance. The exhibition challenges colonial narratives of Tkarón:to/Toronto by highlighting artists who re-map understandings of this region by unearthing the past to imagine the future. Undercurrents re-aligns concepts of duration with natural cycles, scheduling the exhibition around the scope of September’s full moon to new moon lunar cycle (September 10 - 30).

About the curators:
Undercurrents is curated by Courtney Miller and Valérie Frappier, second-year graduate students in the Criticism and Curatorial Practice program at OCAD University. As a curatorial duo of both a recent newcomer to Tkarón:to/Toronto and someone who grew up in its northern suburbs, they cultivated a shared interest in uncovering histories of the land on which they currently live and work. Citing re-mapping strategies as a collaborative practice, their curatorial work aims to challenge colonial narratives while centering embodied knowledges and realigning with natural cycles.

Graduate Studies Colloquia

Tuesday, September 17, 2019 - 1:30pm to Wednesday, November 6, 2019 - 1:30pm

One of the most important aspects of university life is the sharing and discussion of ideas. The colloquium — or academic conference or seminar — represents an invaluable opportunity for graduate students to present their thesis/MRP work. Each graduate program at OCAD University hosts such an event with the goal of having students discuss their thesis or MRP work. Open to the university and wider community, these colloquia are defined by intellectual rigor, the presentation of original ideas and work and critical discussions.

#HOUSEOFCOLLAGE

LILY’S GALLERY
2F – 758 BATHURST ST

House of Collage is an art exhibition featuring work by Leeay Aikawa. Opening on September 14 and continuing through September 26, the exhibition will include her oeuvre, ranging from photomontage collage using advertisements of Americana, more recent abstract collage works to some paintings that were developed from digitally composed collage, in which the artist worked across a decade. While she constantly shifts between styles, the exhibition represents the compelling and expressive nature of collage and how it has shaped the connection with each direction the artist has taken to the present. We are happy to invite you all to the creative mind of Leeay Aikawa. In addition to comprising many works which have never been seen before in public, the exhibition is unique being held at an artist-run apartment gallery in Mirvish Village, housed in one of two standing buildings on Bathurst Street. Along with the exhibition, there will be a pop-up vintage clothing show presented by Vintage Grounds curated by Lily Abraham. Visitors are encouraged to try on thoughtfully curated one of a kind attire. We look forward to seeing you at the opening party.

Jad Al Rabbaa (Digital Futures, MDes 2019) Presents his research project, "MRsive" at HCII

Jad Al Rabbaa MRsive
Wednesday, August 21, 2019 - 3:45pm

Congratulations to Jad Al Rabbaa (Digital Futures, MDes 2019) who recently attended the HCII 2019 - (Human Computer Interaction International) held in Orlando, Florida. Jad was invited to present his extended abstract and poster submission co-written by OCAD U Faculty members Dr. Alexis Morris and Dr. Sowmya Somanath.

"It was a very humbling and insightful experience. I met a lot of people in the industry and discussed very interesting research initiatives that are currently happening in universities around the world." - Jad Al Rabba

Jad was one of eighteen students from around the world chosen to present at the conference; as part of the novel design ideas student competition. MRsive investigates, "How indoor wayfinding and visitor engagement in the museum might be improved through interactive augmented reality. We designed “MRsive”, a handheld Augmented Reality (AR) tool using a user-centered design approach. The ultimate goal is twofold: the first is to simplify the required cognitive effort in navigating the museum space, and the second goal is to boost visitor engagement with museum artifacts through multisensory interaction. MRsive uses computer vision tools to read visual features in the space and achieve accurate indoor positioning of the directions and virtual cues anchored in the physical space."
