Overview

Esther Choi is Assistant Professor of Criticism and Curatorial Practice (CRCP) and Photography, and a faculty member in the Interdisciplinary Masters in Art, Media, and Design program.

As an architectural historian, her research interests center on the entanglements between architecture and the life sciences in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the intersections between artistic and architectural movements throughout the twentieth century. She often writes about contemporary issues in architecture and design practice.

Ms. Choi's first anthology, Architecture at the Edge of Everything Else, coedited with Marrikka Trotter, was published by MIT Press in 2010. A forthcoming volume entitled, Architecture Is All Over, also coedited with Ms. Trotter, will be published by Actar Publishers in 2016. Her writing has appeared in publications such as Artforum, Art Papers, and Architectural Review, in addition to exhibition catalogues like Hippie Modernism: The Search for Utopia (Walker Art Center, 2015).

She has co-curated exhibitions and organized symposia on a variety of topics. Ms. Choi is a contributor to the Radical Pedagogies project, led by Professor Beatriz Colomina at Princeton University, which was exhibited at the 14th Architecture Biennale in Venice, the 7th Warsaw Under Construction Festival, and the 2013 Lisbon Triennial.

Ms. Choi has taught at various universities, including the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union. She studied photography, video, and installation at Concordia University, where she received her MFA in 2007, and architectural history and theory at Harvard Graduate School of Design, where she received a MDes in 2008. She is currently completing a joint PhD in Architecture and the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in the Humanities at Princeton University.
