Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art and the Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers are excited to announce the new Career Launcher opportunity for a 6-week Self-Directed Research Residency.
Approaching its 20th anniversary, Prefix ICA invites emerging collectives and individual artists working with or around photography to propose new works that engage with the gallery’s programming and publishing history. Selected applicants will work collaboratively in a self-directed research residency that will take place between November 12th and December 21st, 2018. The research will culminate in an open studio session at the end of the residency.
With the support of the Prefix team, the residents will have access to the Prefix gallery, reference library, programming archives and a shared budget of $500.
Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art is a public art gallery and arts publishing house based in Toronto, Canada. Founded in 1999 by Scott McLeod in consultation with a national advisory council, the institution fosters the appreciation and understanding of contemporary photographic, media and digital arts through exhibitions, publications, public programmes and related activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have graduated from OCADU in 2017 or 2018, or be a current upper year student with a major or minor in Photography.
- Interest in contemporary photographic, media and digital arts.
- Ability to work independently and to take initiative.
- Interest in working collectively.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

CV(s) for each applicant/member of the collective.
A letter of intent that outlines:
- The collective’s mission OR artist’s statement for independent applicant;
- The project or theme(s) that will be explored during the self-directed residency;
- Experience in working collectively or in a collaborative environment;
- Interest in working with Prefix ICA.
- 5–10 images of previous work with an accompanying image list. Each file should be in jpeg format and no larger than 500K (0.5MB). Please number and identify each file with artist’s last name and title of work [01_Last Name_Title.jpg].
