MELTDOWN:

An Investigation of a Seascape in Two Forms

Annette Mangaard MFA Thesis Exhibition

The exhibition is culled from video I shot during a two-week residency at Two Rooms in Duntara, Newfoundland last July 2016. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to film an enormous iceberg grounded in the bay during this time.  The exhibition includes a short documentary and an immersive media installation.

The four-minute documentary portrays fishermen working from a repurposed fishing boat, using the nets, hooks and picks usually associated with the harvesting of codfish, now collecting ice for the making of designer vodka.

In an adjacent gallery, an immersive cinematic media installation displays enlarged microscopically filmed imagery of underwater tidal pools shifting and moving with the ocean currents. Another area of the gallery invites closer inspection of the iceberg seen in a variety of weather scenarios projected onto and refracted from a series of suspended acrylic discs.

Through the juxtaposition of the documentary and an expanded cinema, I invite spectators to reflect from different vantages on the impact of environmental changes on water, including its economic, community and personal consequences.
