Ashley Scarlett [OCAD University] “Materiality and New Media Art Materials”

In the colloquium. Cecchetto will talk about aurality-informed approaches to digital technologies and big data; and Ashley Scarlett will discuss how new media (art) materials might aid in overcoming the conceptual aporias present within broader discourses on digital materiality.

David Cecchetto is Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities at York University (Toronto). He has published widely, including the monograph Humanesis: Sound and technological posthumanism (University of Minnesota Press, 2013). As a quasi-practicing non-musician, David has presented work in Canada, Mexico, Russia, the UK, and the USA. www.davidcecchetto.net

Ashley Scarlett is a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto, in the Faculty of Information. Working in close collaboration with Semaphore, a UofT based New Media maker and research cluster, her doctoral research explores contemporary new media artworks and making practices as a grounded means of engaging with the theoretical parameters of ‘digital materiality.’

ProprioMedia Colloquium Series, co-chaired by Selmin Kara and David McIntosh, provide a venue for OCAD faculty, select grad students, and guest speakers to showcase their current theoretical and practice-based research. The colloquia take place monthly and feature 2-3 speakers, delivering 25-30 minute presentations, followed by a Q&A.
