Description

This presentation will examine how the use of scaffolded assignments helped students adapt to new ways of learning and making. These assignments incorporate writing across the curriculum theory (WAC) and strategies for student learning. An important issue that this research raises is that creative processes are not chronological—they vary depending on the assignment and the individual student. This creates a variety of challenges that need to be addressed in advance of or during an assignment that is scaffolded. The central question focusing this research is: Can creative design processes, so unique to individuals, be scaffolded and if so how?

An exhibition by Brandon Fujimagari, Cleo Halfpenny, Sangmin Lee September 20 - October 14
Skawennati and Jason Edward Lewis write, make art, invent technologies, and run workshops that teach Indigenous youth how to make video games and machinima (among other things). Their individual and collaborative works have been distributed and celebrated online, in gallery exhibitions, public installations, and at media and Indigenous arts festivals across Canada and internationally. Critical to their creative practice is the idea that their work in the virtual world helps to enact positive change in the real world.  
Drawing from Peter’s current research into a critical history of data visualization and his previous journalistic work on product design, this talk makes connections between international standards of fit, measurement and time and their entanglement with Western industrialization and colonization. He’ll argue that in this history of measurement there are links between an aesthetic movement and racist scientific theories of the 19th and 20th century that will help us better understand the long shadow of Modernism in design education.
