Welcome to Daylight Saving Time. While we’re all probably still feeling the effects, it is nice to leave work in daylight again. We are making our way out of a tough winter of record-breaking snow and cold.
Because of the severe weather, we had to reschedule the talk by alumnus, artist and graphic design icon Burton Kramer. I’m grateful to Burton for making himself available again on April 17 to share his amazing insights on the graphic design industry in Canada. I hope you can attend.
Given our budget challenges, we’ve been focussing very intently on fundraising and government relations on the local, provincial and federal levels.
I am pleased to say that the Search Committee for VP Academic & Provost has completed its work; the decision will be announced in the coming days. The VPAP is the chief academic officer of the university, responsible for driving innovation and excellence across the institution while inspiring the highest standards of scholarly, creative, research and studio work. Thanks to all who submitted their suggestions early on in the process.
I’d like to congratulate Professor Bonnie Devine and a team of INVC students on receiving a very important honour: they were presented with the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards for their project Uncover/Recover. A joint web-based project with the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), the students worked with curators and others to create an online multimedia exhibit to celebrate Indigenous peoples’ creative legacy – past, present and future.
On March 1, a number of employees attended the OCAD U CO offices at the waterfront campus to see the final presentations of the teams taking part in Making OCAD You. The initiative is a design-thinking experience where over five full-day sessions, selected participants designed ways to improve the work environment and experience at OCAD U. I was very impressed by the proposals, which ranged from apps to pop-up lounges. You can read more about it in the newsletter below.
The final piece of the scrim on the Experiential Learning Centre at the Rosalie Sharp Pavilion is in place! I recommend everyone have a look at it from inside 115 McCaul St. to see the intricacies of the perforations up close. It’s wonderful to see all the pieces come together.
I was very moved to attend the Student Recognition awards on March 12 at the Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers, celebrating peer mentors, student group leaders and student employees, among others. Thanks to the members of our community who made this wonderful event possible, especially Campus Life Coordinator Brent James.
Warm regards,
