Always Already[1]

Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media and Design First Year Exhibition

OCAD University Graduate Gallery

Reception: April 4, 2018- 5-8pm

The artists and designers of the Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media and Design Graduate Program at OCAD University have practices that span many forms of visual research and creative production. The Always Already exhibition captures the plurality and paradoxes of interdisciplinary practice. It showcases how their work intersects, resonates, and diverges thematically—always already in dialogue with the complexities of contemporary art and design.

Curatorial Statement

Always Already is a generative collision; a dynamic state of synchronous creation and destruction. It is temporality that is never closed and is always in flux. It is self-definition in a world of infinite possibilities.

We are the artists and designers of the post-disciplinary, post-internet age. We deal in hybridity and build worlds. We acknowledge that all identities are layered, fluid, and fragmented. We are experimental materialists. We are artistic omnivores. We know that rules are made to be broken.

Artists and Designers:

Tal Sofia, Sarah Carlson, Coco Guzman Martin, Vanessa Jackson, Shannon Kupfer, Elizabeth Lopez, Ellen Snowball, Adrienne Matheuszik, Kirstie McCallum, Alex Perlin, Kristi Poole-Adler, Randa Reda Mahmoud, Philip Sparks, Jeff Tallon, Dori Vanderheyden, Lingxiang Wu

[1] Always Already is a term we borrow from critical theory, a nod to the scholarly research component of our program. We use it here as playfully, as a point of entry into the complexity of our interdisciplinary work.
