The Practice of Puncturing - Making Spaces for Decolonized Graphic Design

Friday, October 26, 2018 - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Kelly Walters is a designer and educator whose work investigates the intersection of black cultural vernacular in mainstream media. She feels her role as a designer is to understand how socio-political frameworks and shifting technology influence the sounds, symbols and style of black people. In her independent design studio Bright Polka Dot, she produces websites, print publications and environmental designs for exhibitions. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Communication Design at The New School in Parsons School of Design. >> http://www.brightpolkadot.com/

Ramon Tejada is an independent Dominican/American designer and teacher based in Providence. He works in a hybrid design/teaching practice that focuses on collaborative design practices working with not-for-profit and educational organizations. His recent design research interest lies in the area of Decolonizing Design—disruption of the Canon, inclusivity, diversity, collaboration and the expansion of design narratives and languages beyond the “traditional” Westernized narratives of design. Ramon is an Assistant Professor at RISD in Providence. >> https://ramongd.com/
