OCAD University mourns the passing of Frances Gage

Photo of smiling elderly woman Frances Gage
Monday, December 4, 2017

Prolific sculptor, WWII veteran and OCA alumna Frances Marie Gage passed away on Sunday, November 26, in her 94th year.

Born in 1924 in Windsor, Ontario, Gage lived a remarkable life, serving in the intelligence service of the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (Wrens) during World War II before studying sculpture at OCA, the Art Students League of New York and L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. For two years she worked in what was once Tom Thomson’s “shack,” a toolshed in Toronto’s Rosedale Valley ravine.

Gage’s life story is told in the biography, Unlikely Paradise - The Life of Frances Gage by Alan D. Butcher.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 1 to 4 p.m. with tributes and remembrances at 1:30 p.m. in the MacCoubrey Funeral Home Reception Centre, Cobourg.

Come Up To My Room - The Gladstone Hotel

Thursday, January 18, 2018 - 10:00am to Sunday, January 21, 2018 - 3:00pm

Congratulations to our current Interdisciplinary Master's in Art, Media and Design MDes student Katrina Tompkins, IAMD alumni Ashley Snook (MFA 2016) and Digital Futures alumni Jordan Shaw (MFA 2017) who will be showcasing their work at the Gladstone Hotel's upcoming event "Come Up To My Room".

"Come Up To My Room (#CUTMR) is an alternative design exhibition that provides a platform for experimentation outside the norms of art and design, at the edges between intention and interpretation. Freed from the constraints of traditional practice, CUTMR encourages spatial exploration that engages our senses, our memories and our perceptions of reality. The exhibition challenges participants to push their everyday practice by offering a blank canvas upon which to explore new themes and ways of working. Framed within the backdrop of the historic 128-year-old Gladstone Hotel, CUTMR invites artists and designers to create site-specific, immersive installations that stimulate the imagination and encourage discussion and dialogue between contributors and visitors alike."

The exhibit, featuring more than 70 works by 43artists, opened with a reception at the company’s Mississauga offices. Guests at the reception enjoyed an opportunity to meet with the artists. Special guests included Thomas Beck and Yvonne Denz from the Canadian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Judy Leroux, long-standing community partner from Youth without Shelter.

Stefan Karrenbauer, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Financial Services Canada, hosted the reception, with Katie Cauzillo, Art Program Specialist and curator of the exhibition, as well as Leila Matta, Art Program Manager who oversees the company’s art exhibitions in Canada and the United States. Guests from OCAD U included Laura Millard, Interim Chair, Drawing and Painting, Anda Kubis, Associate Professor, Faculty of Art and Gillian Flanagan, Senior Development Officer.

This year, the company purchased its fifth art piece for its permanent collection—artist Amanda Clyne’s painting, With Restraint. Clyne participated in the very first exhibition held at their offices in 2009.
