Artist's Statement

For nearly a decade my work has been focused on the visible passage of time, experienced through the exploration and documentation of abandoned and decaying buildings in cities like Hamilton and Detroit. I have always been fascinated with historical architecture, specifically how we interact with our buildings and structures, and what happens when that interaction ceases to exist.

My current body of work continues to explore the connection between people and their environment, but with a focus on historical representations of that relationship. To that end, I have been working on a series of paintings based on photographs found at the City of Toronto Public Archives. These images span several decades and are nostalgic of the city as it used to be. They celebrate the many past incarnations of Toronto -the vibrant intersections of the city and interactions of its people.

Ontario MPP Monte Kwinter, alumnus and former VP, retires

Robert Montgomery, Monte Kwinter, Sara Diamond and MPP John Milloy with plaque
Monday, July 24, 2017

Longtime MPP Monte Kwinter will not be seeking re-election in York Centre next June. At 86, Kwinter has the distinction of being the oldest MPP in Ontario history.

A former vice-president and alumnus of the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University), Kwinter was first elected to the Legislature in 1985, serving as Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations, Minister of Financial Institutions and Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology.

Over his three-decades-long career at Queen’s Park, Kwinter has and continues to play an important role as a champion for OCAD University. He has been instrumental in advocating on OCAD University’s behalf, most notably in 2002, when the Government of Ontario passed new legislation changing OCAD U’s name from Ontario College of Art & Design to OCAD University. This was a significant victory for the institution in its evolution to become Canada’s most comprehensive art, design and media university.

Kwinter graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1954 and served as Vice-President from 1971 to 1973. For his contributions and achievements, Kwinter was awarded an honorary doctorate from OCAD University in 2003.

OCAD University would like to congratulate MPP Monte Kwinter on a venerable public career, and wish him well in his future pursuits post-retirement.

Claude A. Simard Retrospective

Painting by Claude A Simard
Wednesday, June 14, 2017 - 9:00am to Sunday, September 3, 2017 - 9:00am

Québec City invites the public to visit an exhibition of works by Claude A. Simard (1943–2014), titled Painting Happiness, presented at the Centre d’interprétation historique de Sainte-Foy presently to September 3, 2017.

Claude A. Simard studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto from 1962 to 1966. Head of advertising for Maison Simons and founder of Groupe Communikart, Simard then carved himself an important niche in the art market and his works were shown in prestigious galleries in Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton.

Known for his important contribution to visual arts and design, Mr. Simard was received by the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1981, at the age of 38. He designed eight stamps for Canada Post, including two Christmas stamps (1983 and 1987) and one commemorative stamp, Blue Poppy, issued in 1997. The first retrospective exhibition of his works was held in 1991 at Villa Bagatelle in Quebec City, which was then presented by the City of Paris at Château de Bagatelle. Both events were well received. Since his passing in September 2014, numerous art collectors and lovers have attributed to Claude A. Simard the ability to sublimate reality.

This retrospective exhibition pays homage to the artist, who is known for his colourful depictions of floral garden scenes, landscapes, still lifes, and figures. It features 50 works as well as a few travel notebooks and significant creations in the field of graphic design. Divided into 10 areas, the exhibition delves into various aspects of Claude A. Simard’s life and the key themes that were close to his heart.

The Honorary President of the retrospective is Mr. Peter Simons.

Celebration of Life: Alan Todd (AOCA, 1966)

Alan Todd
Friday, June 23, 2017 - 6:00pm to 9:00pm

A colourful tribute to a life beautifully lived! We invite you to join us in honouring our dear Alan (February 21, 1944 - May 22, 2017) the eternal joyful optimist. Alan wasn’t one to let convention interfere with the deeper things. His reverence for life was balanced with a belief in not taking it too seriously. In that spirit we wish to mark his passing with loving respect but not somber gloom; to celebrate him as he unfailingly celebrated all of us - with joy, sincerity, and great love.

Join us to remember, to cry and to laugh. As Alan would say, “let it all hang out!” Please come as you are comfortable, and not necessarily in black - perhaps inspired by your favourite crazy Alan Todd outfit! Help us raise a glass, literally and figuratively, to our one and only Alan. To paraphrase one of his often-used expressions, “it would be great to be seen by you!”

About Alan Todd (AOCA, Industrial Design, 1966)
Though Dad's humble spirit would hate it, we would go so far as to say that he was one of the pillars of the design world in Ottawa for most of his life. He spent 20 years as chief of design at the National Gallery of Canada and headed the design for the Dinosaur Hall at the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Bank of Canada Money Museum as well as many International Trade Exhibitions for the Canadian Government Exhibition Commission. In his retirement he acted as senior designer on many projects including: "Leonardo da Vinci: The Mechanics of Man" and "Vermeer, Rembrandt and the Golden Age of Dutch Art Masterpieces" at the Vancouver Art Gallery, The Museum of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien: "Canada in the World", and the Brandywine River Museum.
