OCAD U Digital Future’s alum, Yifat Skaik (MDes ’14), is already making waves within the city’s digital landscape. She was recently interviewed by the Torontoist for their I Want Your Job Series, as the current Toronto Public Library Innovator in Residence. Through her classes and lectures, Yifat is bringing intimidating practices, like 3D Modelling, to a general audience, helping Torontonians without any previous technical abilities create finished 3D models.

Criticism and Curatorial Practice Alumna, Lisa Myers, AGO Artist-in-Residence

Criticism and Curatorial Practice Alumnae, Lisa Myers, AGO Artist-in-Residence
Friday, September 18, 2015 - 4:00am

Lisa Myers' (MFA '11) work as an artist is influenced by the many years she worked as a cook and by her family stories and history from the Georgian Bay and Lake Ontario regions. She grew up on a farm in Milton and is of Anishinaabe ancestry from Shawanaga and Beausoleil First Nation. Lisa experiments with walking and cooking as ways to think through the ideas in her work. She uses a range of media and materials including printmaking, sewn structures, film and surfaces often involving video projections, audio and the assemblage of materials such as food, seeds, canvas and beads. The tactile nature of working with these materials is similar to the creative process of cooking. Each ingredient has a story and its origin or cultivation contributes to the meal, as do the materials that Lisa brings together in her artwork. In addition to being an artist, Lisa is a curator, musician and chef. Lisa earned her Master of Fine Arts in Criticism and Curatorial practice from OCAD University. She has exhibited her work in venues including Urban Shaman (Winnipeg), Peterborough Art Gallery (Peterborough), MacLaren Art Centre (Barrie), and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). Lisa works and lives in Port Severn and Toronto, Ontario.

artpark Residency - June 2015 - Ryan Pechnick (MFA '16)

artpark
Tuesday, September 22, 2015 - 4:00am

Ryan Pechnick (MFA '16) was selected as the representative for OCAD U at the WARP program. During his time in Lewiston he created a large sculptural project with scorched wooden timbers arranged in a semi-circle, in addition to several “wrapped” boulders with burlap and rope throughout the park. The projects created by Ryan and the other WARP student-artists will remain on-view through to Fall 2015 and possibly beyond. Reflecting on his work at the closing, Ryan remarked that the project was “the best thing [he’s] ever made”.

Founded in 1974 in honour of Robert Smithson, Artpark is a 150-acre parkland which features year-round arts programming. The WARP program was initiated in 2015, allowing 5 MFA candidates from Yale, SUNY Buffalo, Virginia Commonwealth University, OCAD University, and RISD to take part in an immersive 3-week residency where the student-artists lived in the community and created public projects on the Artpark grounds. This was a fully-funded program, with room/board, transportation, materials, artist assistant/technician support fully covered.

Drawing and Painting Digital Painting Atelier – Call for Submissions

Collage with blues, reds and brown
Wednesday, July 15, 2015 - 4:00am to Friday, August 7, 2015 - 4:00am

Artists are invited to submit proposals to the Digital Painting Atelier. Artists are selected through a juried process. This opportunity provides an artist with one-week access to technology and technical support offered through the Digital Drawing and Painting Lab for creative experimentation and expansion of their practice. The artist will produce a new and original edition of artwork/digital prints and interact with the community of the Drawing and Painting program. The artwork produced during the residency will benefit both the visiting artist and the Drawing and Painting program. The artist maintains majority ownership through a 60/40 split of a minimum edition of 5 prints. The Faculty of Art will exhibit, auction and archive the remaining 40% of the edition. This in turn offsets the cost of running the Digital Painting Atelier and helps to raise funds for other initiatives in the Faculty of Art.

OCAD University students will have an opportunity to interact with the artist in residence as well as assist in the development of the artist’s project. The visiting artist will be expected to lecture on their work, conduct informal presentations, critiques and/or workshops with students and faculty. Moreover, the artist will be entitled to an honorarium as well as travel expenses and accommodations (when applicable) during the residency. Please see the application form for more details.

“My residency at the Digital Painting Atelier at OCAD was fantastic. It is a rare experience to be given space and time to work, as well as the equipment you need, material and financial support, and the opportunity to engage with an exciting and welcoming art school community. I came to Toronto with a project in mind, and everyone at OCAD did everything they could to make sure I was in a position to make the work and leave with a finished edition of professional prints, which I did. But I also was offered such amazing hospitality, including getting shown around Toronto's galleries, taken to the museum, and the chance to get to know some really wonderful faculty, staff, and students. And of course, it was great to give a talk about my work and to meet one-on-one with many students to give feedback about theirs. I've applied to and done many residences, and the Digital Painting Atelier is very unique — those of us working with digital painting and digital drawing should be grateful it exists.”

Ron Shuebrook Workshop

Black and white photograph of an elderly man in a studio
Monday, July 13, 2015 - 4:00am to Friday, July 17, 2015 - 4:00am

Presented by The Thames Art Gallery, Chatham

The Thames Art Gallery is bringing acclaimed Canadian abstract painter Ron Shuebrook back to the Audrey Mistele Art Studio of the Cultural Centre, Chatham. Upon the conclusion of his nationally traveled drawing exhibition, organized by the Thames Art Gallery in 2013, Ron has generously agreed to return to Chatham for one week. On July 13 - 17, 2105 he will teach a drawing class and share his comprehensive knowledge of contemporary art. Ron was the Gallery’s ‘Artist in Residence’ in the fall of 2012 in preparation for his national exhibition entitled, ‘Drawing’ guest curated by John Kissick.

Ron has designed a workshop, to develop each participant’s skills of observation. Beginning with charcoal or graphite on paper, a still life will serve as the subject and catalyst for the drawings that will be pursued in the first day’s session. A discussion will follow about how and why participants might use their chosen materials to evoke the still life, and to organize purposefully the shapes, planes, lines, and textures derived from their perceptions of this subject. In the following sessions, the possibilities of memory, imagination, the unconscious, and process as sources and means for creative image making, including abstraction, will be addressed. The cost of the workshop is $230 plus HST and all materials will be supplied.

Ron has taught and been an administrator at many arts educational institutions in the United States and Canada including Kent State University, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, the Ottawa School of Art, and the University of Guelph. He also served as the President and Vice President, Academic, of the Ontario College of Art and Design. This is a rare opportunity to participate in an intensive drawing workshop with a nationally and internationally recognized artist. Class size is limited so please register early to avoid disappointment.
