Gallery 44 is a dynamic space and a leading artist-run centre led by a dedicated group of artists, curators and educators, and is currently seeking a part time Curatorial Project Assistant. Reporting directly to the Executive Director and Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs, the Curatorial Project Assistant will contribute to the research, development and realization of an online exhibition and adjacent programming. The exhibition will be released in five chapters between Spring2019 and Winter 2020, and will functions as a hybrid online gallery/publication.

The Curatorial Project Assistant will work directly with artists, guest curators, designers, and Gallery 44 staff. This is a 14 hour per week position that runs from January 29 to October 31,2019. Strong knowledge of contemporary and historical photography, and digital art and culture is an asset.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizes research for each chapter of Gallery 44’s upcoming online exhibition. 
  • Assembles and organizes all content, images, biographies and logos.
  • Organizes programming logistics for associated artist talks, performances, workshops and panel discussions. This may include booking hotels and flights. 
  • Assists in the preparation of materials for communication and marketing. 
  • Maintains excellent, timely and professional communication with artists, curators and designers.
  • Organizes and maintains artist and curator related information on shared database
  • Manages and maintains all aspects of the publication’s website
  • General administrative assistance as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCADU in 2017 or 2018
  • Strong communication skills and professionalism verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated research and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience with project management and logistics coordination
  • A good attention to detail, time-keeping and organizational skills
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite. MAC iOS.    
  • Website management experience
  • Experience in writing and editing exhibition and catalogue text is an asset

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Design & Communications Assistant will support or be responsible for a variety of projects and tasks based on incoming level of experience and the evolving needs of the organization, including: 

  • Developing and producing media releases and marketing materials, posters/signage/way finding, print collateral/didactics, exhibition catalogues, web-based content, newsletters, surveys, and templated documents with an eye toward supporting, extending, and improving upon our existing graphic identity and house style. 
  • Aiding in development and implementation of strategic communications initiatives such as marketing campaigns, social media strategy, enhancements to our website and curator/artist registry, curatorial network and community building, accessibility initiatives, audience outreach and visitor engagement, and donor/partner/sponsor relationship-building. 
  • Managing projects from start to finish including scheduling, concepting, cost estimating, design development, presentation, and production in collaboration with team members, guest curators, artists, writers, and others. 
  • Assisting with exhibition/event documentation through visual (photo/video) means for digital and print platforms (website/catalogues). Developing content for newsletter, social media, e-commerce, etc. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCADU in 2017 or 2018.
  • Candidates with excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, strong initiative, and willingness to work independently as well as collaboratively are encouraged to apply. Extreme attention to detail, ability to give and receive feedback, and desire to learn a must.
  • High-level typography skills and mastery of Adobe Creative Suite, plus ability to design for both print and web applications, as well as fluency with social media platforms, HTML/CSS, and Google Apps. 
  • Photography/videography skills and knowledge of digital interactivity and accessibility would be major assets.
  • Thorough knowledge of design history, interest or experience in exhibition/environmental design, and a desire to help make connections across disciplines, cultures, and contexts are huge plusses. Interest in curatorial practices and contemporary art contexts in Toronto,Canada, and beyond also a plus.

The Curatorial Programs Assistant will support or be responsible for a variety of projects and tasks based on incoming level of experience, areas of interest, and evolving needs of the organization, including:

  • Assisting with exhibition planning, budgeting, and fundraising, liaising with guest curators and artists, drafting agreements and record-keeping, handling inquiries and submissions, and other administrative tasks.
  • Supporting the execution, promotion, and documentation of exhibitions and events including research, writing, and editing media releases, newsletters, didactic materials, and catalogues for print and web platforms. Assisting with installation as needed.
  • Gallery attending and media/public engagement including exhibition talks, tours, and appearances on behalf of Critical Distance. Aiding in research, development and implementation of strategic outreach initiatives including education programs, curatorial network and community building events, accessibility initiatives, digital strategies, and donor/partner/sponsor relationship-building. Providing ambassadorship for the space and our programs through network outreach.
  • Participating in team meetings and strategic planning sessions to shape the organizations’ future and share feedback/ideas for all aspects of operations and programming.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCADU in 2017 or 2018
  • Excellent written/spoken communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, strong initiative, and willingness to work independently as well as collaboratively. 
  • Ability to work on multiple projects with attention to details and deadlines. Punctual, reliable team player.
  • Strong knowledge of curatorial practices and contemporary art contexts in Toronto, Canada, and beyond. Desire to foster critical discourse on topical issues in art, curating, exhibition-making and more through exhibition and educational program development.
  • Willingness to actively engage in outreach and network/community relationship-building on behalf of the organization. Interest in making connections across disciplines, cultures, and contexts.
  • Proficiency or willingness to learn: Google Apps, social media platforms, and other apps such as Asana, and Adobe Creative Suite.Photography skills a big plus.
  • Experience in content/project management, marketing, development, event planning, and/or inventory management is an asset.

Scrap Metal Gallery is welcoming applications for the part-time position of Research and Curatorial Assistant. This position will support the Director/ Curator on various research and curatorial tasks related to the Gallery’s 2019 exhibition programming. Scrap Metal Gallery is a privately-funded not-for-profit art project space that endeavours to present bold, critical and poetic contemporary artworks through a carefully curated exhibition program. Since its inauguration in 2011, Scrap Metal has presented solo exhibitions by artists such as Miroslaw Balka, Ragnar Kjartansson, Eva Kot’átková, Paul P., Ryan Gander, Iris Häussler, Edson Chagas and Abraham Cruzvillegas. The gallery is committed to collaborating with other cultural organizations. Art en Valise, Toronto International Film Festival and Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival are on-going collaborators.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Director/ Curator:

  • Research and developexhibition content.
  • Assist in research, compilation of artwork lists, documentations of artwork, record and file maintenance.
  • Assist in exhibition curation including retrieval of materials, researching and verifying information, correspondence with lenders, artists and donors, and generating exhibition copy.
  • Provide tours, information and answers, or refer questions about exhibitions.
  • Assist with the installation, strike and events related to the exhibitions.
  • Assist in planning schedules and travels of the gallery, and replying to external requests for information.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCADU in 2017 or 2018.
  • Strong communication skills both verbally and in writing with a level of professionalism.
  • Demonstrated research and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and manage workload accordingly.

The Toronto Biennial of Art (TBA) is accepting applications for a full-time position of Curatorial Assistant. An ideal candidate must have a view to inclusivity and diversity, building capacity and changing the landscape of future Canadian leaders in arts and culture. The Curatorial Intern will gain significant, hands-on curatorial experience through numerous training and learning opportunities with the Senior Curator and Curator, as well as with the broader TBA team; and cross-departmental exposure to all aspects of the biennial, including logistics, production, publications, finance, communication, partnerships, and fundraising.

On view from September–December 2019, the Toronto Biennial of Art, launching infall 2019, will be Canada’s newest biennial of contemporary art. Taking place along the waterfront in unexpected venues and public spaces and in collaboration with not-for-profit galleries, museums, community organizations, and educational institutions across the city, the Biennial will present Canadian and international art within the complex creative, cultural, social, and political context of Toronto.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supporting the curatorial team in all aspects of their projects, including: conception, research, implementation, programming, artists visits, etc.
  • Supporting the education team with programming when relevant and as needed.
  • Conducting curatorial research for the curatorial team.
  • Supporting artists directly in the implementation of their projects as needed.
  • Assisting with welcoming artists to Toronto: on-boarding, welcome package, navigating the city, etc.
  • Providing production and coordination support to the curatorial and production teams as needed: installation and striking, contractor prep and coordination, equipment research, etc.
  • Providing administrative support to the curatorial team and managing daily tasks as they arise, as well as acting as an advocate for and providing tours of the Biennial.
  • Assisting all aspects of TBA events: preparation, setup, strike down, post-event reports, and etc.
  • Acting as an advocate for and providing tours of the Biennial.
  • Numerous training and learning opportunities with the Senior Curator and Curator, as well as with the broader TBA team.
  • Cross-departmental exposure to all aspects of the biennial, including logistics, production, publications, finance, communication, partnerships, and fundraising.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCADU in 2017 or 2018.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience incuratorial, museum studies, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated understanding of digital communications and marketing platforms.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated organization and project management skills.
  • Required: MAC OS; Microsoft OS; Microsoft Office Suite; Adobe Creative Suite; email.
  • Assets: Sketchup; languages spoken other than English; ability to manage engaging visual content for digital platforms, including websites, video and social media; Driver’s Licence.
