OCAD University’s Faculty of Art is looking for a Junior Managing Editor to support the upcoming Faculty of Art’s publication celebrating the history of the Nomadic Residency. Reporting to the Associate Dean, Outreach & Innovation, the Junior Managing Editor will assist in research, edit, and production activities to ensure timely delivery of a quality publication.

Launched in 2006 with the generous support of Partners in Art, Nomadic Residents aims to inspire and influence the OCAD University community and the public by featuring artists and thinkers from around the world whose work questions issues such as travel, mobility, displacement, dislocation and homelessness, as well as the speed or instability of modern life. In bringing these innovative and diverse individuals to take up temporary residence at OCAD U, Nomadic Residents joins here to there, the local to the global and the provisional and the permanent. The series continues with the generous support of the Jack Weinbaum Family Foundation.

RATE: $16.50/hour for 28 hours/week

TERM: Part-time starting June 2019 (20 weeks)

DEADLINE: Monday, June 17, 2019

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate editorial publications and meetings for artists, contributing writers, and designers
  • Research and organize the Nomadic Resident Archive
  • Plan and manage content, including rights and permissions and production schedules
  • Build and nurture a team of talented writers, designers and producers
  • Work on the design and layout of the publication
  • Assist with proofreading procedures and edit copy when necessary
  • Assist in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style and tone

QUALIFICATIONS

  • OCADU graduates from 2018/ 2019 or current students at the masters level. 
  • Strong interest in publications, especially art publication.
  • Strong communication skills and professionalism verbally and in writing 
  • Demonstrated research and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience with project management and logistics coordination 
  • A good attention to detail, timekeeping and organizational skills Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, Creative Suite. MAC OSX.

Join Jordana Wright, Managing Director of Activate Space, Dave Sorbara, Founding Partner at Signal and Ryan Martin, Partner at Aura LLP for a discussion about the challenges that arts workers in the GTA face with finding affordable and appropriate working and living spaces. The panel will be moderated by Alayna R. Kolodziechuk, Lawyer at Taylor Oballa Murray Leyland LLP. Part 2 of Legal Intersections will discuss some of the unique ways creators can set up places to work, create, and live, as well as answer legal questions attendees may have about these spaces.

Nuit Blanche Toronto is seeking applications to the part-time Community Engagement Assistant position. Supported by the Career Launcher program, the position will include a full integration into the professional environment of the City Cultural Events Team at the City of Toronto. The position will include the research and development of new programming initiatives for Nuit Blanche 2020 and participation on the on-site team responsible for implementation of the 2019 Nuit Blanche event. The position will offer critical insight and valuable exposure to the planning and execution of a large-scale public art event, learnings about the range of career options available, the opportunity to develop the skills required to succeed in the arts and culture sector. 

Nuit Blanche Toronto is Toronto’s annual free all-night contemporary art event that invites adventurous residents and visitors to take to the streets from sunset to sunrise. Experience Toronto transformed by hundreds of Canadian and international artists. One night only, all night long. 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists on community engagement work to increase Nuit Blanche awareness in communities outside the core. 
  • Works with City Cultural Events Team to identify and facilitate capacity building amongst communities to gather inputs for specific public programming events.
  • Assists with the delivery of interactive educational activities that engage public, provide resource material, collect contact info for future engagement events.
  • Oversees on-site impacting surveying with audience during public programming events with support from volunteers.

Xpace Cultural Centre welcomes applications for the Career Launcher position of Programming Coordinator. The Programming Coordinator works in collaboration with the Director and second Programming Coordinator to manage, plan and execute workshops, events and exhibitions for Xpace’s exhibition spaces. The Programming Coordinator acts as a liaison between the OCAD U student body, local and national arts organizations, artists and the general public for all information pertaining to Xpace.

Xpace Cultural Centre is a not-for-profit artist-run centre supported by the OCAD Student Union. We are dedicated to providing emerging and student artists, designers, curators and art writers with opportunities to showcase their work in a professional setting. Our programming responds to contemporary issues, and the interests and needs of our membership and community.  Xpace is committed to maintaining an anti-oppressive, queer positive environment, welcoming marginalized, racialized and Indigenous folks.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Director, the Programming Coordinator:

  • Coordinates the planning and installation of exhibitions in consultation with the Programming Committee;
  • Coordinates the planning, promotion and implementation of workshop and event programs;
  • Coordinates web and print promotional material;
  • Edits exhibition essays and writes exhibition essays as needed;
  • Outreaches to student populations at OCAD University and other Toronto institutions;
  • Leads occasional art tours for classes and other arts organizations;
  • Creates press releases and disseminates programming information to media, Xpace membership and relevant arts organizations;
  • Ensures that the vision, mandate and objectives of Xpace are carried out through all programming initiatives;
  • Manages the planning, organization and execution of special projects;
  • Oversees interns in collaboration with the second Programming Coordinator and Director;
  • Maintenance and organization of space, supplies and storage;Co-manages and updates the Xpace website and social media as needed;
  • Acts as an ambassador for Xpace and the OCAD Student Union at class visits and OCAD U events. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduated from OCAD University in 2018 or 2019 (undergraduate or graduate);
  • Excellent administrative, communication, verbal and organizational skills;
  • Knowledge and interest in contemporary visual art, design and art writing;
  • Comfortable working in a Mac environment;
  • Comfortable with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office and Wordpress;
  • Able to work in a collaborative environment;
  • Able to work occasional evening shifts for Xpace events;
  • Experience in exhibition installation, art writing/editing, arts education, media arts skills and/or grant writing will be considered an asset.

Join us for a presentation by Mariam Zaidi, Managing Director of Toronto Animated Image Society to learn more about their residency programs, membership and Anijam call for submissions.

The Toronto Animated Image Society - TAIS’s Anijam call features 10-second-long animated films submitted under a theme, which are compiled and screened at the TAIS Annual Animation Showcase.

The Showcase Jury’s pick for Best Anijam will be awarded a cash prize and in-kind studio use toward production of a short-animated project for presentation at TAIS Showcase in 2020. The 2019 Anijam is High Tension. Artists are invited to submit 10-second-long mash-up masterpieces, creative never-before-seen combos, or unique universes populated by well-known characters.

The Young Canada Works (YCW) program offers a variety of summer jobs and internships for you to develop work skills and gain professional experience. There are about 2,300 job opportunities per year in the fields of heritage, arts, and culture!

On April 15th, the Ontario Association of Art Galleries (OAAG) will be visiting OCAD U to introduce their organization and the Young Canada Works (YCW) program.

OCAD U Photo grad Morgan Sears Williams will also join us to share her experience as a former YCW recipient and how this led to her current full-time job.

Following the presentations, the CEAD will be hosting a resume writing workshop. We will be going over helpful tips to aid you in building a resume just in time for summer jobs and internships. Please come with your laptop and a physical copy of your most recent resume.

DPXA Students to Screen Animation with Live Orchestra

DPXA Students to Screen Animation with Live Orchestra

Earlier this semester, OCAD University's Experiential Learning Program partnered with the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra on a project to create a series of animations that will accompany the live performance of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Led by Tommy Truong (DPXA Alumni) and animated by a group of talented Digital Painting Expanded Animation students, this final animation will be screened with a live orchestra at the Living Arts Centre as part of their season finale performance.
