Thursday, January 2, 2020 - 12:00am

This year, DesignTO partnered with OCAD University’s Design4 program to create look and feel of the festival’s 10th Anniversary. Working closely with DesignTO and visual communications agency aftermodern.lab, this year’s refreshed look and feel builds on the existing DesignTO aesthetic, but with a fresh point of view. Design4 introduces principles of experiential learning into the realm of paid professional opportunities for Faculty of Design Undergraduate students in their third of fourth year of study, or students at the Master’s level. Three students, Edwina Mui, Minju Roh, and Tanveer Sobnack were selected to participate in this project.

With a general understanding of the DesignTO identity, the design process began with research, pulling inspiration from the existing DesignTO logo, the city of Toronto, and the work of other artists. After completing their research, the team began brainstorming and mood boarding design ideas and mapping out the purpose of the design.

Learn more about this collaboration at DesignTO’s blog.

DesignTO is Canada’s largest annual celebration of design with over 100 exhibitions and events forming Toronto’s design week, January 17–26, 2020.

Partial is an art marketplace and platform for artists and art-seekers to connect and engage in real and accessible transactions. Thanks to the smart try-before-you-buy options, originalwork by local artists are just around the corner – and now within reach. The small team began Partial in 2016 in Toronto with the simple goal of bringing more art out of artists’ studios and onto the walls of homes and businesses in their city. Whether you are a seasoned art collector or a curious art lover, Partial is here to make it simpler to bring true, original artwork onto your walls.

From October 2018 to March 2019, three students from Industrial Design, Graphic Design and Material Art and Design were placed with Partial Gallery to work on developing a high-fidelity interactive mockup as a prototype in order to optimize Partial's Dashboard. "The co-founders of Partial, Chris Kim and Tammy Yiu, put their heads together and asked themselves, “What kind of design project would fulfill the objectives [of Design4], provide a positive learning experience, and (of course) make Partial even better?”. The answer was in improving, and optimizing, an existing part of Partial’s infrastructure: its Dashboard experience. Through brainstorm sessions and research over the course of the project, it became clear that there was untapped potential in turning this component into a product in itself." The results of the project are set to launch in Summer 2019 and you can read more about it and the Design4 team here.
