Nadine Bariteau - Toronto, Canada

For this project, printmaker and sculptor Nadine Bariteau will create a kinetic sculpture of luminescent printed images that float above the heads of audience members as they move through the space. The glowing prints will bring abstract representations of the natural world—falling feathers, dragonfly wings and helicoptering maple keys—into the urban environment of downtown Toronto.

After losing her mother in a fatal accident, the artist has been questioning ideas of loss, grief and regeneration. Through this moving installation, the artist hopes to ask the public, Do Angels Exist? Illuminated by UV light, the immersive work will be mounted in a downtown alleyway where wind can make elements move and turn slowly, creating a large-scale mobile of otherworldly figures.

Do Angels Exist has been commissioned by Vistaprint and will be created using customized products from its catalogue.

Nadine Bariteau is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in printmaking, sculpture, installation, video and performance. Her works are studies of permanence and ephemerality, and the interplay between human-made and natural environments. She has exhibited her work extensively both nationally and internationally in China, Belgium, Argentina, Australia, the United States, Russia and Japan. Bariteau teaches printmaking part-time at OCAD University and lives on the road part-time in her converted bus, Studio Coyote.
